Adoption

Question...

My SIL was recently informed that a 10 yr old boy will be joining her family!!  My question is, what have you found that's worked best to make the adopted child feel welcome in your family?  I know to show him love & let him know that we're there for him, but what else can we do as the aunt & uncle?  We don't live close, but we want to let him know that we care.  Do you think gifts or just spending time with him/them would be enough?  TIA & any & all help is greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Question...

  • Do they have other kids? Something that has occurred to me recently is that our 1st DS has TONS of special Christmas ornaments and new DS has none...so I have been buying special ones for him and asking other relatives to get some (ie, Special Grandson, cool nephew, etc) so that when we take out the ornaments he isn't immediately smacked in the face with the idea that he is an outsider. Just a thought. Anything like that which shows acceptance and love into a new family is a good idea. Good luck and congrats!

  • No, he's their first.  Besides DD, he's only the 2nd grandchild on DH's side.  I really like the Christmas ornament idea!!  Thanks!!
