How do you keep all the toys organized???

I'm on a mission to organize the house by Christmas. Just cleaned out the toy box and can not believe how many vehicles, blocks, and other little things these two boys have. We are not having anymore children, so I'm getting rid of/selling/giving a way all toys they have outgrown. Then there is a the little pieces to toys that are ALL OVER THE HOUSE!!! How do you keep all this stuff organized? We have a small house and all this stuff is driving me CRAZY!

Re: How do you keep all the toys organized???

  • It's supposed to be organized?!?!!! LOL

I just have some shelves for big things and some shallow bins for small things and a basket for stuffed animals and another for books.

I think shallow bins are the key because they are less likely to get dumped and when they do get dumped it's less to pick up.

When my SS was small we had all his legos in a massive bin. So when he went to play with them, what'd he do? Dump them all out while looking for just the right piece. All 1000 or so of them. And play for 5 minutes and then whine about picking up a gazillion pieces. I still don't have an answer for the lego problem because there are too many to go in a shallow bin most of the time, but for everything else with lots of pieces - shallow bins.

  • I don't use a toybox, I have loads of baskets and bins. I use the Trofast System from Ikea and each bin hold designated toys, I happen to sort them by plush, wheeled, electronic and then 2 bins of misc. I do have a separate 'box' that is like 2x2x2 for trains and have a little side table with 2 drawers, 1 for balls and one for blocks. All of the Little People stuff is together and I keep a basket for the Little People themselves and their accessories.

  • Ours are by no means organized, but we use baskets for sorting most of the small toys.  That, and every now and then I just go through and get rid of a bunch of stuff.  We have a small house, and the toys are all in the living room, so if I don't give stuff away or pack it away in the attic, we won't be able to turn around in here.
