North Carolina Babies

Think my monkey is sick

She's had a little fever all day- 100-100.5, but she also had 2 GROSS poops so I figure she's teething. She's also been coughing some, but I know that can accompany teething as well. She took extra long naps today.

But then right before bed she threw up her whole dinner- the first time she has ever thrown up (well, real throw up instead of baby throw up), and afterwards I took her temp and it was 101.4. I gave her some Tylenol, she drank about 4-5 oz of apple juice and I put her to bed.

Is that ok? Should I check in a few hours to make sure her temp is coming down? This is her highest temp to date, so I'm not sure exactly what to do. I think if she seems sick at all in the morning we will take her to the pedi.

Re: Think my monkey is sick

  • Poor Maddie! :(  Sounds like she might have a virus.  She didn't throw up right after you gave her the Tylenol did she?  Because the medicine syringe used to sometimes make Liam gag and throw up if I accidentally put it too far back in his mouth.  I mistakenly thought he had a stomach virus once when it was just a regular fever virus and I was the one making him throw up.

If you're worried, you could go in and feel her forehead in an hour or two just to make sure she doesn't feel like she's burning up.  I hate putting him to bed too when I'm not sure which way his fever is going.  101 isn't really that high for a baby, in fact I don't think they technically even consider it a fever until 100.5.  If you have trouble bringing it down, Ibuprofin always works better on Liam's fevers.  I always give him that instead of Tylenol at bedtime if he's sick because I know it will last him better through the night.

GL!  I hope Miss Maddie is feeling much better in the morning.  And I can't believe you made it to 14 months before she got a fever - what a good little immune system on her!  Liam's been sick this week too - must be something going around :(

  • We are dealing with this tonight too. I cant tell if its molars or ears. I have given about everything to treat both....except an AB. He is alao not settling at all for bed, he is so tired but wont settle Ive been in there twice already and he just wont even lay with me.

We have our LB session tomorrow and may have to cancel...I guess Ill know if its ears if I see a fever in the am or through the night.

Hope Maddie gets better soon, GL!

  • I say as long as the fever reduces with the meds you should be fine.  I would keep a watch and keep checking her temp and if it continues to reduce after meds that is a good sign.  Keep her hydrated.  And if you are in the least bit concerned (lethargic, not keeping anything down, fever wont reduce) I would call your nurse line and see if you should go to the ER.

We have family who all have H1N1 right now - 3 kids/2 adults - and the fever is not reducing with that - and its staying around 104.

  • Thank you ladies!!  She threw up when I gave her a piece of cheese (I was making a pizza for dinner)- so my fingers are crossed that she just really hates parmesan. She was so pitfiul- just sat there b/c she didn't know what to do when she had throw up all over her and the floor!

She's been a little subdued today, but not too bad. That's a good idea just to go in and feel her to see if she's burning up. I am relieved to know that it's not a high fever for a baby- I run at about 97 degrees so when I see 101 it seems so high to me.

She actually ate a great breakfast and lunch, didn't eat a great dinner but she might just not have been in the mood for ravioli. So I will wait and see how she does overnight and in the morning.

    Thank you!!!
