Babies: 0 - 3 Months

my baby can read?

As a teacher/grad student I'm always one for researching new, cool techniques for helping students how to read.  I came across this site after the urging of my mother. I am all for early, fun learning, what do you all think of this?

Any first hand experience with it. I am tempted to get it for my son for Christmas, he'll be 5 months at that time.

Re: my baby can read?

  • My opinion as a teacher and parent is that this is quite the gimmick.   I'm  all for early reading (my niece was reading fluently - think newspapers - by tthe time she was age three), but starting flashcards/structured games/etc. at five months of age is too early.   Simply reading/singing/playing with your baby is great way to foster learning.  Baby/toddler's have a TON to learn in the motor/verbal/comprehension skills departments, that I think bombarding them with flashcards (and other things) is a little much.   It's a great idea in theory and may very well work for some children, but starting later isn't detrimental to their development either.
