Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When you first started with rice cereal - what time?

We'll be starting the twins on rice cereal this weekend - they turn 4mo next week and have their pedi appt- and he likes to know how they are doing with their first few days of solids, so we need to start in a few days.

i'm debating what time of day to do it... i guess it doesn't really  make a difference when - but when did you do it? any reasons why that time?

I'm thinking mid- day because Griffin will be napping and we can give the twins more attention... but part of me wants to do it in the evening so when i go back to work in Nov I won't miss that time with them during the day... but it's only 2-3 days/week i'll be working- so maybe i can deal with that... ahhh... decisions. :)

  • we did it in the evening, two hours before bed time.

that way she wasn't rushed or tired.

  • I haven't started with DD, but I think from last time I remember that you shouldn't do it in the evening in case they have problems.

  • After his morning nap around 11 (I offer him some bottle first - so that he isn't fussy and then we do solids). We chose this time because we felt he should eat solids when in a good mood (when better than after a nap), we wanted to make sure we had plenty of time between feeding and bedtime for his digestive system to work out any issues (including extra BMs) and it would be a good time for us to be consistent with it every day.
  • We just started our little guy on cereal as well and we do it in the evening. I think he's still getting used to it, because he won't take the full amt that they suggest on the box for the first feeding! I just give him what he will take, usually about 6 or 7 spoonfuls and then he's done! lol I think it's just so new to him. Oh, we do ours in the nighttime and I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but he began to sleep through the night when we started it 3 nights ago! He doesn't take much, like I said, but I guess it's enough. We give him cereal, bath, bedtime routine, bottle and bed. He's out by 6:30, so we give him cereal about 5:30-5:45!!! GLBig Smile
  • the BM issue at night is a good point - i'll do it mid-day- thanks!
  • Our pedi wanted us to do morning and evening. So, the first time we gave it to him was in the evening. We originally started doing it around 7:30 -- an hour before bed -- but that wasn't working so we ended up giving it to him around 5:45 when we get home from work. His morning cereal is done at 6:45 when he wakes up and is followed by a bottle -- I think he takes about 4 or 5 ounces now

This. I was doing it at around 7 before bath, but it was not working.  He was too tired!

  • We do it 1hr after his first morning bottle.  I have also heard to introduce new foods in the morning so you can watch for a reaction (if they have one) and get appropriate medical attention.

I do a small serving now at dinner time as well.

  • We also started it in the evening.  Our pedi never said anything about the time of day for rice cereal.  Its just easier before the bath :)  because messes will happen!

  • We are going to start them next week too.  Their 4 month appt and birthday! is tomorrow.

We will most likely do it at night at first or wait for the following weekend during the day now that I'm back at work.
