11 week old suddenly fussy while eating

My son is suddenly very fussy while feeding. I EBF and he has always been one to feed for a long time and to be very peaceful while doing so. Well the past few days he has been very fussy on the breast. He pulls away, cries and when I try to get him to go back on he cries and throws his arms all over the place. I have given him gas drops and gotten him to burp, but still he seems pissed off. Totally not like him.

I know it is not because he prefers the bottle because getting him to take a bottle is a chore.

I was thinking that maybe he is more efficient now and full sooner? Still he never removed himself before and had never cried while doing so.Can he really be done eating in less than 5 minutes?

I am getting worried that he is not eating enough. Yesterday he only ate 5 times and 1 of those times he barely ate because he was being so fussy and I could not get him to eat.

  • The only time my baby has ever done this is when she and I had thrush and she seemed to have trouble eating.  But I was hurting also so when she had trouble I did to because it would hurt when she would eat.

  • My son has been doing the EXACT same thing for about 5 days. He was a peaceful eater before, but now he kicks and cries during feedings, and is very impatient going from one side to the other.  I'm just assuming he is getting more efficient.  DS is still having the same amount of wet diapers, so I take that as a sign he's still getting enough to eat.  Do you use a paci?  I have found at the end of the feeding, when he's starting to get fussy, I put his paci in and that eliminates the screaming.
  • My 12 week old is doing the same thing! I thought my supply was low but when I compress, milk squirts everywhere. I have no idea why he's doing it. Maybe eating is boring to them now that there's so much else to do?

This sounds *exactly* like what happened to me.  DD used to eat for a good 45 minutes to an hour.  Then one day, around 10 weeks or so she would cry, hit my breast, pull at it, and was completely miserable.  I thought for sure she wasn't getting enough so I made an appointment with the LC.  She weighed DD before and after and it turns out that DD was getting all she needed after 10 minutes.

I would encourage you to see an LC to get DS measured.  It sounds like he is probably more efficient.

Also, DD never learned how to remove herself either.  I know she's done because she switches to comfort sucking not because she pulls herself off.
