OCTOBER
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the U.S. end in miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of the newborn child. National observance of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn and newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members on work to prevent causes of these problems.

Health care professionals recognize that trends of recent years, such as smaller family size and postponement of childbearing, adds another dimension of poignancy to the grief of parents who have lost infants. More than 700 local, national and international support groups are supplying programs and strategies designed to help parents cope with their loss. Parents who have suffered their own losses, health care professionals and specially trained hospital staff members are helping newly bereaved parents deal constructively with loss...

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 314, has designated the month of October, as "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month" and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this month.

NOW, THEREFORE, I RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the month of October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of October in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirteenth.

I had no idea until I read it on the SAL board.  I was just thinking about this too and wondering if there was a designated month for pregnancy loss.  

Too all of us who are a part of this shared sisterhood, I am so sorry for our losses.  May our babies always be remembered, never forgotten.  May the world not force our silence and may we endeavor to bring hope and comfort to other women/men who too must walk this path of pain.

What a great way to remember our little ones!

We lost Baby Girl Z on March 18, 2009 at 13 weeks due to Turner's Syndrome. My due date was 9/26 (the day before my birthday), so she's been on my mind the last few weeks.

Baby "Wednesday" lost January 3, 2009 at 9 weeks of unknown causes.

Baby Patterson lost at 3 weeks but not discovered until 8 weeks on June 28, 2008.  I can't believe that I would have a 9 month old right now if it weren't for my loss.

Our little raspberry, missed miscarriage discovered June 12, 2008, baby should have been 11 weeks 4 days- lost due to a polar pregnancy.

Our second was a chemical pregnancy (I hate that term), March 24, 2009.

(I assume this has been resigned since Reagan...) Awesome idea though. In honor of our baby boy, lost at 12 weeks on May 12, 2009, due on Thanksgiving...

I don't think they need to resign proclamations as they are historical documents and once instituted are in effect thereafter.  I could be wrong though.

Baby "Poppy" was discovered lost at 12 1/2 weeks on November 20, 2008 due to a blighted ovum.  We miss her everyday.

Thank you for posting this.  I did know about it, and also Oct 15th is the official day for pregnancy loss awareness internationally.

I remember my baby Noel, lost at 11 weeks for unknown reasons.  Due on Dec 21/09.

I don't think this has been resigned.  I believe October is now Hispanic Heritage month unfortunately.  It would be great if we still had a month on Pregnancy Loss. 

I would like to remember my two babies, lost in January and March.  Forever missed.

I lost my baby girl Mia Elizabeth 31 hours after birth due to ARPKD.  She would have just passed her 1st birthday.  I miss her constantly and will love her always.
