How long did you "cramp" after your IUD insertion?

My experience with my IUD insertion was awful. Seriously.  It wasn't so much the procedure but the fact that I had an effing audience since I was at a teaching hospital.  When I had a total of four people staring at my vag and cervix all I could think was that I should have switched over to another group before I got this done. I almost had them stop right in the middle when I figured out a student was doing it because the resident was talking her through it.  It was seriously the worst OB/Gyn experience ever for me.  Lovely right?

Anyway, I'm totally going to complain to my midwife next week when I see her...but this post actually has another point.  I'm still feeling kind of crampy and some pain in my cervix...it feels like it did at the peak of a contraction when I'm sure my cervix was dilating, except not as bad. Like a twinge.  I wonder if she messed up?  Or is this what it's supposed to feel like for a day or two?  I have the paraguard if it matters.

Oh, and they failed to mention how soon I can actually do the deed without worries.  Is it immediately effective?  Jeez, they suck.

ETA: I had it done yesterday morning.

  • By the next day i was feeling better

  • I believe it is immediately effective. I didnt have nay pain during insertion and maybe very light cramps for the rest of the day.
  • The cramping is normal. I have had the Mirena twice now (pre & post baby) and had cramping both times. Slightly worse the first time than the second. The IUD is supposed to be immediately effective.

  • did you get mirena? i almost got it and asked how soon it was effective, and my dr. said immediately.

i'm sorry your experience was so terrible!

  • It is effective immediately.

I cramped for about 24 hours, bled for 24, then stopped bleeding for 2 weeks, then bled for another 4 weeks, then had never-ending pain in my ute, and then had it removed.  MW said, upon removal, that it "seems like" it "settled weird," causing the pain.  That's not common, but it sucked enough for me to not try again (like she suggested).  I bet the worst is over for you.

  • I cramped for less than 24 hours but they said a few days is normal.  I was told it's immediately effective but to wait 48 hours after insertion before putting anything up there due to the risk of infection.  Sorry your experience was so bad!

  • i took 800mb ibuprofen and a lortab before i went = no cramps.

my insertion story has you beat... lol. i had an audience, AND i had to have my ute pulled into position by the doc clamping and pulling down on my cervix... which punched a hole in my cervix... which led to more clamping to stop the bleeding. it was worse than any cx i felt before i got the epi.

  • Oh no!  Sorry you had a bad experience.  I thought it was a painful procedure, and my midwife did mine.  One thing you do have to be careful with is to make sure they didn't puncture the uterus.  My midwife said this could happen and the best way to tell that there was a problem with the insertion is if I wasn't back to feeling normal within 36-48 hours.

I cramped for about 24 hours afterwards, but have been great since (had it for about 5 weeks now).  The cramping was worst for the first 12 hours and got much better and lighter after that.

    IUDs are effective immediately!
