Pregnant after 35

Does your OB handle non-pg related symptoms?

I have been messing around with what I now believe to be a sinus infection for several weeks now.  I don't have a primary doctor so I was just planning to mention this to my OB on Saturday.

The previous OB that I had for 13 years would definitely treat me for something like that but I don't know if it was just because I was a patient for so long.

Is that the norm?

Re: Does your OB handle non-pg related symptoms?

  • Most obgyns are accustomed to being the de facto primary care physician for many women. They know that they are often the only doctor a woman sees on a regular basis. This is why, at the yearly gyn appointment, they ask so many general health questions.

I am sure your Ob will treat you for your sinus infection. My OB prescribed my asthma meds for me last week since my new primary care doc suggested that I not come into his office until after I deliver (because of all the flu patients they are treating who might be sitting in the waiting room).

  • Good question... I'm not sure either. I would think that if your OB doesn't, that they would be able to give you the name of a dr that they like/trust.

Sorry I'm not to much help. Feel better.

  • A few OBs I've seen in the past/present tend to try and shy away from questions that aren't in their specialty just for the legality concerns.  But he/she may be able to give you an "opinion" and may be okay with prescribing something.   It really depends on the doc.

  • During one of my pregnancies, I was on bed rest in the hospital due to PTL from 29-36 weeks.  When I was 36 weeks, I kept telling the doc and nurses that my ears really hurt and they would tell me that they would see if they could find an otoscope, but they didn't follow through...this went on for about 2 days.  I went into labor a couple days later and while I was pushing, both my ears "popped' and I felt relief.  I mentioned it again after baby was born and the doc noticed that both ears were "leaking" (sorry TMI).  She found an otoscope and when she checked my ears, both were horribly infected and both ear drums had burst during labor.  Just had to share...Hope your doc has an otoscope to check your ears Wink.
