Pregnant after 35

Induction date - 10/7/09

Hi everyone,

Well, my OB has decided my boy's idea of being fashionably late is not a good one - still dilated only 1 centimeter as of today, blood pressure is starting to increase, and retained 3 lbs water since last week (!).  So, I am going to be induced 10/7 - I have to be at the hospital at 7:00 pm so I'm assuming the delivery would be 10/8.

I'm nervous! We have a doula and I really hoped to do the birth w/o any intervention or pain meds, but I've heard induced labors are more painful than natural ones.

  • Good luck!

Honestly, it's noble for you to want a purely natural birth for your child.  But when your health and your child's well-being is starting to be compromised, in my book, all bets are off.   Don't wait too long to make those crucial decisions just because you want to stick to your birth plan.   I won't regale you with the details, but a friend of mine just told me about someone who waited too long to make the move from midwife to hospital/doctor and the end result was not a positive one.

And when it comes to birthin', they're ALL painful to a certain degree! :)   If there was such a thing as a "pain free" birth,  we'd all sign up for it!

  • I hope all goes well on the 7th for you and your baby. Good Luck, LO will be in your arms soon.
  • Good luck!  I had an unmedicated water birth on Pitocin, so it can work out.  (That sounds wrong since obviously Pitocin is medication; I meant pain med free)  Also sometimes the ripening (Cervidil or whatever they will do the evening of the 7th) is all women need to kick into labor.   But don't be hard on yourself - I like to say that "natural labor is for women who are laboring naturally" (i.e., not being induced)  I hope you have a great birth, medicated or not - and more importantly, you will have your beautiful son!
  • my induction w/ DD was a complete and total success.  not one problem.  i hope the same goes for you.  just think, you'll be meeting your son in no time!
  • How exciting!  Good luck, I hope it turns out better than you expect!

I very well may be in the same boat, my doctor's been watching my blood pressure and making induction noises.  I've adjusted my expectations for pain-med-free labor because of that.  Hopefully we won't need it, but you never know.

  • What is it with these slow-poke babies lately! :)  Caleb was 11 days late and had to be induced also.  Good luck with everything and enjoy the ride.  Don't beat yourself up if everything doesn't go according to plan... remember that the end goal is a healthy, happy baby and mommy!  Besides, anything that's coming out of you is natural anyways!

  • Good luck!

My doula was absolutely wonderful and I know it made difference in my ability to go natural. We set up a code word for pain medication if I REALLY needed it. There were a few times where I just needed to say that I couldn't do it or that I needed something and my doula would just reassure me and I was able to work through it without the meds.

  • Good luck!
