Where did your twins sleep for the first 4 months?

I saw the thread a few pages back, but am wondering if a few more people can weigh in with their sleeping arrangements for the first few months.

We don't have much room for two bassinets or two pack'n'plays.  So, we're wondering if we can get away with just one pack'n'play for the first 4 months?  We already own a regular pack'n'play from when my nephew visited about a year ago.  The bassinet portion has a weigh limit of 15 lbs.  So, that will last about a month.  Then, can they sleep all night in the bottom portion?  The person who answered the previous post mentioned they were in it for naps, but what about through the night?

BRU has a twins pack'n'play - has anyone used that?  Is it worth buying that when we already have a regular one?

And did you use some sort of sleep positioner to keep them from rolling into each other?

I really appreciate your thoughts/advice!

  • our bedroom is tiny- but we were able to fit in 2 Arms reach bedside cosleepers - the minis.  We have to have them sleep apart b/c we use the motion Angelcare Monitors- which don't work if they sleep together.

  • Are you hoping to have them in your room that long, for co-sleeping purposes?

My twins aren't here yet, but based on my DS, I would think that by 4 months, they won't do well in a PNP together. I could be wrong though and that's where another MoM will be a better resource :)! But my DS was an active roller by then and I could only imagine he'd have been rolling over a brother or sister by that point. Before 4 months though, it probably would have been fine.

We had DS moved into his own crib for most of the night after a few weeks at home, we all slept better that way (he had a tendancy to wake up at 4am though...at which point I brought him into bed with me and snuck in a few more hours :) ). I imagine we'll try the same for the twins, though IDK how the whole co-sleeping thing will work w/ 2.

Anyway, regarding your question--other than convenience for you for nursing at night, there's no reason they have to sleep in the bassinet portion of a PNP. They'd be fine in the lower portion. The bassinet is just convenient for you so you could pretty much just roll over in bed, reach over and pick them up. So, as long as they both still fit in one PNP, it wouldn't be an issue to use the bottom half. I've never tried the twin PNP, so no help there!

I guess I envisioned 4 months in our room for convenience.  We have a two bedroom place and we're hoping between grandparents and great-aunts, we will have a constant supply of guests here to help for the first several months.  So the nursery would stay a guest room for a while.

  • I have the twin pnp from BRU and we are using it right now and love it. My babies are only 11 days old so i dont know where they will be in 3 more months.

  • We bought one Arm's Reach Original Cosleeper to use (attached to our bed) for the first several months. That would have worked great ... except we quickly discovered we couldn't get any sleep in the same room as the babies. (Very wakeful at night, grunting, gassy, etc.) So we moved them to a shared crib in the nursery pretty early on.

  • Oh, and ours were able to share a crib (and a PnP when we traveled) until 6 months because they slept better swaddled until 6 months. If they had needed to be done with swaddling earlier, we would have separated them earlier.

I've heard really mixed reviews of the twin PnP. If you already own a regular one, I don't know that I'd spend the money on a twin version. I would think your babies could share a PnP if necessary until at least 2-3 months. But honestly, I do think (especially with twins) it would be hard not to have the option to use the nursery as a nursery in the first few months. I would go ahead and get a crib set up in your nursery, too in case you have a similar experience to us and can't sleep in the same room as your babies. I've heard a number of other twin parents say the same thing (about not being able to really sleep in the same room as their newborn twins) so I think it's wise to have a backup plan.

  • They shared the PNP in our bedroom for the first 2.5 months and then we moved them to their nursery.
  • Cool - thanks for all the responses!
  • Our girls sleep in a cosleeper together in our room. They are 3 1/2 months old now. I don't know when I'll move them to their crib. I would definitely recommend a cosleeper.
  • ours are sharing a crib in our room at night and then in the twin PnP during the day (downstairs). so far this is working well for us.
  • They have been sleeping in their cribs since we all came home from the hospital.

  • Mine slept in their cribs from the day we brought them home from the hospital -- for naps and for the night time.

We have the Graco Totblock PNP -- not sure if this is the one you're talking about (it has bright colors and bugs on the sides) that they've slept in for travel, and done fine.

  • Ours were in our room for the first 3 months.  We couldn't have them sleep flat on their backs due to reflux, so we put two bouncy seats into an arms reach cosleeper next to our bed.  Kind of weird but it worked for us.

This is what we used, one on each side.  We started moving them to their room around 5 months.  They were not good sleepers so it was easier to have them in our room.  They just turned 6 months this weekend and they are successfully sleeping in their cribs.  (woohoo!)

I just folded up the co-sleepers and now my bedroom looks huge!
