Nurseries and Baby Gear

Is it too early to paint?

We just moved into our new house last weekend. MY FIL wants to come down next weekend to paint the nursery since DH won't be coaching and can help him (DH coaches until about March-ish).

Is it too early to paint the nursery? I know exactly what I want, but I'm trying not to buy anything until I hit second tri....do you think its okay to paint this early though??

(Yes, I know this is probably just gonna come down to personal opinion...but I guess I'm looking for some of your personal opinions...when did you paint and begin buying things etc?)

Re: Is it too early to paint?

  • I guess it's up to you. Personally we wanted to wait until we were out of the 1st tri before we did anything (painting, furniture purchase, etc).

That being said we waited until 25-26 wks before we did anything. Sure we waited a while but considering my history we wanted to make sure.

Im sure you'll get all sorts of answers on this.

  • I had several business trips to make while I was early in my first trimester.  DH painted the nursery then...while I was out of town.

We didnt, however, start buying furniture until after our 12 week ultrasound, whenever everything looked pretty good.

  • I wouldn't do anything this early, personall.  We waited until 24ish weeks to paint and ordered the furniture right after our big u/s at 19/20 weeks.

  • DH and I painted before we even got pregnant.  I wanted to be involved so we picked two neutral cream and tan colors, did our chair rail and a few other things together.  Now we don't even have to give it a second thought and can just decorate when we find out if we are having a boy or a girl.

  • Personally, I think it's too early.  But that said, we waited until the 2nd trimester to buy anything (or even announce the pg).  We bought furniture after the 20 week ultrasound and DH is painting the nursery this weekend (at 24 weeks).  It's totally up to you though!  If the room needs painted, and you know you want a neutral color, I don't see any harm in painting now.
  • If you are just painting a neutral color (I am assuming this since you don'tknow the gender yet) I don't see a problem with it. We just finished painting our nursery but we wanted to paint it to match the bedding which we wanted to do gender specific so we had to wait until we knew what we were having and had the bedding picked out. I say go for it! Less to do later!

  • I guess if you are 100% sure what you want, go for it. ?It really comes down to personal opinion. ?(We waited to do ANYTHING until we found out the gender at 16 weeks, and had it confirmed at 20.) ?Unfortunately, we are STILL attempting to clean out what will be the baby's room..... lol

  • I say paint, you said you just moved in right? Your going to want to make the place yours anyway so why not paint. But I wouldnt go buying furniture and wall art/decals yet. I don't think I could have that early but that's because I didn't know what I wanted to do with the room. We are having a boy so it's mint green and chocolate brown but if we were having a girl I was undecided on colors. Good luck and have fun!
  • If it were me, I'd paint.  How would you feel if you lost the pregnancy, though?  If it's a more neutral color or something you would feel okay with for a guest room or something, I'd go for it.  If it would just remind you and cause you pain, then wait.  Hopefully (and most likely) you won't have to worry about that anyway, but that would really be the only thing to consider.  Personally, if your dad wants to paint, I'd take the help when I could get it IMO.
  • It gets really cold where we live really quickly and i hate the smell of even latex paint, so now that we are almost in our 2nd trimester we are planing on painting with in the next few weeks, we already fell in love with our bedding and know what we want to do, so I say go for it, if you know what you want, do it up and have fun
