Why do people not think before they speak?

I have bright red hair, DH has dark brown hair, Bone Jr has blond hair.  However he looks just like DH.  We had our first family photo taken the other night and the photographer asked us how did he get the blond hair.  Then the waitress at dinner asked us the same exact thing.  Perhaps I am just becoming overly sensitive, but we do want to adopt #3 and at this rate we may be adopting #2.  So those children definitely won't look like us so we will have to explain to rude@ss strangers that he isn't genetically ours.  I am beginning to think that when people ask about DS #1 I ought to respond that we stole him.

Are people just incredibly rude when they are trying to make harmless conversation, or am I too touchy?

  • Kids are the ultimate conversation starter for annoying people. I can't believe the stuff people just blurt out or ask about a stranger's kid.

  • Both DH and I have dark hair and DS is blonde.  My Dad's side of the family is as well so clearly he got it from me.  People ask me all the time how he ended up blonde.  It's annoying.  I wonder if they would shut up if I told them he is the milkman's kid....?
  • People are just stupid- that's my theory. I can't tell you how many random strangers have tried to start conversations with me when I have Joshua- for whatever reason! Not to mention that everyone thinks it's ok to touch my child and I don't even know them! Anyway- sorry to go off here.
  • It is just rude!  I have two friends whose children are half German American and half Mexican American.  People often question the parent who doesn't look just like the child.  And my friend was telling me last night about a woman she knows who is black, her husband is white and their child is very light skinned and people ask her if she is the nanny.  OMG!  SO Racist!

  • I think a lot of people just make harmless conversation that way, just like when people ask parents of twins "do twins run in your family", which I think is incredibly rude because to me it is basically asking if you did fertility treatments.  However, 5 years ago I would probably have thought nothing of asking someone that question because I wouldn't have thought I was asking about their fertility.  The difficult things that we have gone through probably makes us read more into things.
  • Tell them "DNA"...it'll make the really stupid ones shut the heck up because they don't want to look "dumb" by not remembering high school biology.

  • My hair has always been really, really blonde and strait.  My H is bald.

Emerson has dirty blonde hair that is super curly.  People always compliment her curls and ask where they came from.  It doesn't bother me.

Do we know the same friend? LOL

I am black, my husband is white and my DS is very fair skinned with straight brown/blondish highlighted hair. Just recently a Jehovah's Witness who stopped by one morning asked me if my DS was the only kid I "watched." Um..no, I'm not the babysitter! He's my son! I get it ALL THE FREAKING TIME and it's super annoying.
