Pregnant after 35

Re: H1N1 / Swine Flu

  • It's your choice based on whatever risk YOU are choosing to take. Make your own decisions-do not let the media or people on a message board convince you, one way or the other.

This is from the packaging insert from the H1N1 vaccine, available on the FDA website, updated Sept 2009.

    8.1 Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine or AFLURIA. It is also not known whether these vaccines can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

  • As someone who is currently recovering from the H1N1 I would strongly caution you to get the vaccine. The current treatments for this flu are also category C medications, but unlike choosing to avoid the vaccine, choosing to avoid treatment can kill you!

Current estimates say that 50% of the US will contract this flu during this flu season. Half of the population is going to get it. This season. Those are pretty big odds to take.

Both DH and I have been down for almost two weeks with this flu and he actually got pneumonia on top of it. It is a nasty thing and IMHO, the more people who can be vaccinated and try to stop the spread of it the better!

  • That insert exists because, as is the case with almost every drug currently prescribed or given OTC to pregnant women, clinical trials cannot be performed on pregnant women due to legal concerns.  For example, Tylenol has not been tested on pregnant women.

Also, I hardly think reports of documented cases of increased deaths and serious complications experienced by pregnant women are fairly characterized as media hype.

This is an excellent point! Also, I will be getting the vaccine at the recommendation of my dr.
