wdyt: cribs by windows?

what's the consensus on putting cribs under a window?  our window does have blinds and i already hung curtain panels.  i wasn't originally planning on putting the crib by the window, but i'm having difficulty laying out the furniture.  i've heard this is a no, no, but was curious what you guys thought.

Re: wdyt: cribs by windows?

  • We have our crib in front of a window.  Our house is old and the windows are small, almost square.  We don't have blinds but have panel-style curtains on them.  I just tucked them behind the crib.  If it becomes a problem when he gets big and starts to stand up or tug on them, we might move them.  For now, I don't see any harm in it.

  • I am not pregnant yet but we have semi talked about placement of things like the crib. We live on a semi busy street and the baby room window is in the front of the house, next to the front door. I feel more comfortable not having the crib right there, but thats only because of the way our house is.

  • I don't see any problem if the morning light and noise are going to be blocked. Oh and if you aren't leaving the windows open so that the baby has a draft on him all night!

Also make sure any cords or window treatment "extras" aren't' in reach.

  • I'm keeping the cribs against an interior wall so it's not chilly.  I agree with the concern about baby eventually pulling on window treatments - that would be bad!  But I also wanted to add that if you've ever had a bed next to a window, it's sometimes colder.
  • Curtains and blinds can be a major hazard, so watch those.  Also never leave baby alone in the crib with the window open, or you'll have a fall hazard as well.  It happens.  As long as you're careful I'm sure it could be fine.  I personally wouldn't do it though.

  • In California windows break in Earthquakes. I would never put a crib under a window here.

Elsewhere - I don't know. I think, even with dual pain windows and blinds, cold air falls off the window.
