Has anyone done this before? I'd like to paint the light wooden crib we used for my son a white or antique white color. Just wondering if anyone has tips...(or even if this is something safe to do)?
I would heavily hand sand everything to get the finish off. Then use a latex semi-gloss to paint with (you can use gloss if you want the extra shine, but I prefer semi). That's just the re-painting part though. I don't know if it's completely safe - I would make sure there are teething guards on both sides of the crib for sure.
Lightly sand the crib, wipe away any dust, and then let it dry. Use a latex-based paint (as opposed to oil based), and use a paint sprayer - it will go SO much faster, and you'll get a more even finish with less effort. Let dry completely, add a second coat, let dry again, and then consider using some sort of polyurethane finish/sealant, in addition to the teething guards.
I recently painted my sons crib black... I used a liquid deglosser (like "Liquid Sand") instead of sanding all of the spokes and grooves of the crib. All you have to do is rub it on with a rough rag/towel, and paint over the area before it dries. It was so nice to be able to skip the sanding step... and it turned out great.
