Don't know how you gals who live in big cities do it

We've been in Denver for just a few hours, and wow.  We got off on the wrong foot when we hit 5 pm rush hour.  We went to dinner and came across an accident and then construction.  DH is driving, but I'm closing my eyes a lot.  He he.

I do love that you can do/see/eat anything in a big city, though!

Re: Don't know how you gals who live in big cities do it

  • I feel the opposite! I dont know how people who live in the country do it! I can walk to almost anything I want/need in the city. While traffic can really suck (20 minutes to go 5 miles), it probably takes someone who lives out in farm country even longer just to get to the store on an average day.
  • LOL

I live in a smallish town of about 44k people and it's soooo weird!  I grew up in the heart of Detroit when the population in the city limits was 1 Mil+  so a 40k city, 90k metro area is very small to me. I loved the big city! I greatly miss Greektown and Mexican Village and the variety in radio stations. I miss my big city!

My mom always said, if high school sports regularly make the nightly news,  you live in a small town LOL!

  • You get used to the traffic. DH & I strategically time pretty much every thing we do around traffic patterns. :-)
  • Never lived in a big city but have driven in them hundreds of time.  I live outside of Detroit and have no problems driving there.  Denver was not nearly as congested as Detroit.  I'd say Chicago is the craziest...even more than New York.  At least in New York people are not driving 70 mph in a 40 mph speed zone!

I live in the boonies but in 15 minutes I can travel 20 miles and be at a large shopping mall which is surrounded by 3 shopping centers.  Shop.  Another 15 minutes back to peace and tranquility (if the kids are in bed...of course).

  • I love Denver. We miss it so much we just bought a loft down there so we can stay down there more often. Moving to the burbs sucks! I hope you enjoy your trip!
  • Smart ones like me live IN the city like I do :o)  Traffic like that is for people who live in the burbs & commute downtown or the Tech Center--I don't have to deal w/ traffic at all.  Everything I need during the week is w/ in a mile or 2 & often walkable...DH takes the bus to work Downtown (it's about 1.5miles away) so he doesn't deal w/ it either.  The price we pay is a much more expensive house for the size--but it's worth it to us for quality of life.  I can't freaking stand traffic jams..sorry you had to sit in one--rush hour(s) on the freeways are brutal--avoid at all costs (in every city not just Denver) :o)

  • We don't live IN the city, more of a suburb of the city. We just plan our activities and other things for lower traffic times, we also know so many other routes to get places that we very rarely sit in traffic. When we do it drives me up a wall! I do have to say though I learned to drive in a city and those who did not are very obvious.
  • I would not like to live in suburbia. I live in a rural area and that's my second preference.  I'd give anything to live in the heart of the city again (NYC). No car.. no bullshiit.  Just living where everything is!

  • I can defintely see the benefits of living in the city and be able to walk to places.  Unfortunately, if it is pouring rain or freezing cold I'd rather be driving in my nice warm dry car.  Plus, you can only carry so much...I'd have to go every day and that would just take too much time away from things I like to do.  I'd rather zip out in my car and drive to the closest grocery store, be in and out and back home within 30 minutes and have 10 bags of groceries.  I have to admit our largest grocery store is only 5 minutes...if that...away from my home.  Some big cities don't have good transportation (Detroit is one).  There is the people mover and buses but they are cutting routes, etc.  Chicago has the L but quite frankly I didn't enjoy walking blocks and blocks to get to it and we were IN the city.  lol

  • haha I guess i would be a country girl... we dont have much traffic and we have had our fair share of cows in the back yard.. HA...

We have to drive at least 30 min. to get to a walmart, target, ect.  we have a town grocery store, but to get to a giant you are driving 20 min.  and in our hole "county" we have ONE red light :-D I love my country living, I have to drive an hour commute to and from work everyday , but i dont think i could live in the city..

I have a friend here at work that lives in the city and her rent a month is our mortgage and she only have a two bedroom town house.. i have a 3,000 sq ft house!

LOL - this was my exact thought! I'm from the east coast too (Philly, NYC) and visit Denver quite a bit as I have friends and relatives that live there. It's cute to hear it talked about as a hectic city as I find it so relaxing to go there!

  • I don't drive much.  The kids and I take the train or walk or drive less than 2 miles to most things, including the Zoo, museums, aquarium, ect.
