DS's afternoon naps have been craptastic the past three days. Today, he talked for 15 minutes, then slept 33. Cried his little heart out (not like him when he wakes up). I don't know if I'm waiting too long or not long enough. 3 days ago it was right around 3 hrs from his last nap, yesterday it was right around 3 hrs 20 minutes, and today it was about 3 hrs 30 minutes. I waited today until he really slowed down and yawned and rubbed his eyes (only once). What gives...? I really don't think he's ready for one nap a day - he's only 10.5 months old. He doesn't fight going down in morning or afternoon. Usually sleeps about 1.5 hrs in the morning and NORMALLY sleeps 1-1.5 hrs in the afternoon.
What am I doing "wrong?" Any advice from the more experienced ladies?
ETA: the tooth already broke through and was not affecting morning nap or night sleep
Re: Okay, 3 days in a row...what am I doing wrong?
Is he learning a new skill? Walking??
My DS started walking at 10 months, and we dealt with some sleep regression around that time. He just wanted to practice his new skill!
Well you either got married too young or had your baby when you were too old. Just kidding!!
Maybe something is bothering him? teeth? is he fine other than waking up from that nap crying?
DS dropped to one nap at 10 months, so it is possible that he's ready to move to one nap a day. DS started dropping his afternoon nap at around 9 months. He'd do what your DS is doing--talk for a while and possibly sleep afterwards. After a while, the sleep wouldn't happen at all, and then he'd fight going down altogether.
After a month of alternating between one and two naps (and fighting when he did take two), I helped him officially switch to one nap a day. I kept him out past his normal nap time--when we're out and about he stays happy for longer--and then put him down for a mid-day nap instead of a morning nap.
He's not walking on his own yet...he's been cruising around furniture and with his walkers for a while now
Haha! Married at 24.5 and had baby at 26.5.
Tooth has been coming through, but has broken the skin now. Didn't affect morning nap or night sleep. Fine otherwise!
I've just read so many things that most babies don't drop to one nap until well after a year... And, I don't know if he could handle being up that long in the morning. Also...until the last three days, he's been fine with his two naps.
He might be getting close!! DD took her first steps at 10.5 months and she had been cruising since 8 months.
Eh I'd keep with the schedule for now. It could just be a fluke. DD is in the process of transitioning from two naps to one so it could happen sooner for you guys. definitely possible.
When does he normally go down for his nap? When I say mid-day, I mean 11-1. DS normally went down at 10, so I kept him up until 11 and then put him down for his nap. It only worked if we were not in the house though. We had to be at someone else's house, the store, or the playground. At home, he'd notice that he was tired. Over time, I slowly pushed that back to 12, and now sometimes he'll even go until 1 before naptime.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to try. I was shocked that he was doing it so early, and like I said, it took a month for him to fully transition.
He normally goes down 3 hrs after waking in the morning - usually at 6:30. He usually naps 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min (usually 1.5). Then 3.5 hrs after that nap for his second.
