Northern California Babies

How many onesies and sleepers do i really need?

HI there,

I'm confused! I'm trying to be prepared for the baby, but I'm not sure how much I really need to buy.

Does 4-6 onesies and 4-6 sleepers sound like enough? And what about sizes? Did you buy equal amounts of newborn size and 0-3 size?

Thanks so much in advance! :-)

Re: How many onesies and sleepers do i really need?

  • If you have a reflux-y baby who throws up alot, you can go through 4-6 onesies in a single day... I'd want 10-12.

I think I had about that many sleepers... we didn't have a lot of nighttime blowouts, so we were OK...

As for sizing, it's so hard!  Some babies are born into 0-3 and skip NB altogether, some only wear it for a couple of weeks. I do think you'll want significatnly more 0-3 than NB. My Max was wearing 0-3 for close to 6 months!

  • 10-12! wow. thank you!!
  • Anything with feet they grow out of fast.

I bought a lot of the Circo brand sleep and plays. Those things are awesome, and cheap. Logan lived in that type of outfit in the beginning. I would have at least 7-10 sleeper type onesies. 10 plain white onesies to layer with.

  • I needed a lot more than I thought I would.  I think I started with 2 packs of the target sleepers that come in 3-packs.  And I went right out and bought more after G came home.

    Similar with the onesies.

  • keep in mind that rosie was born in the middle of the summer and practically lived in onesies until recently when it started to get cooler.

she had 15 onesies in 0-3 month size, 10 in 3-6 month size .... and 3 sleepers either 0-3 or 3m .. all i know is that i didn't go crazy buying them right away b/c it was so hot when she was born.  in fact last night was the first night she actually wore a slepper aka jammies to bed.

  • Depends on how often you want to do laundry ;)

I hate laundry, so I had about 10 sleepers. My DD was in NB for almost two months, so I ended up having to buy more of those.

Onesies, I had 3 plain white ones in NB, but I put DD in outfits from day one, too - of which I had lots and lots - so....basically I had about 10 outfits and 3 onesies and I do laundry once a week.

One thing I found we liked when she was a NB was gowns instead of sleepers. Way easier for middle of the night diaper changes without waking her up too much. But, it was also summer and she was swaddled at the time so her feet didn't get cold.

  • For N I think I had 4 onesies in NB and 10 in 0-3.  As for sleepers we did not have near enough, I started with 3 NB and 5 0-3, I could have used at least double that.

I think a good amount of onesies is 10 in each size and 7 sleepers in each size.  Unless you like doing laundry every day.

Ditto the outfits for us, N never really wore just onesies unless it was part of an outfit.

And BIG DITTO on the nightgowns, SO SO SO much easier for middle of the night changings!

  • For JLK who never spit up or leaked that would have been enough. For Jonathan no way he leaks through his clothes all the time!

Also I would say wash only one or 2 newborn things but wash all the 0-3. Because you dont know how big the baby will be they may not really fit in newborn sizes...Then you can return them
