crusty, sticky eye?

My dd has been having light greenish or yellow crust on her right eye, sometimes her eyelashes are stuck together when she wakes up also.  Other times it is not dried but more like an eye boogie in the corner of her eye.  The whites of her eyes are not effected and her eyelid doesn't appear to be puffy or red, it's just this crust and eye goo.  Should I contact the pedi?  I have read that it could possibly be a blocked tear duct?  Have any of your LO's had this?

Re: crusty, sticky eye?

  • Probably is her tear duct .  DD's eye did this too.  Call your pedi there is eye drops that she can use.  Its rather expensive it was like 60 bucks for this dinky little bottle but come to find out my pedi had a bottle in his office so make sure you ask if he has them in the office!!!

You could also take a warm wet rag place it over her eye and rub/press down on her tear duct.

after using the medication it cleared up pretty quickly! I ended up getting what she had! yuck!

  • Yep, sounds like a clogged duct.

S has had 2 and J has had 1.  You describedexactly what they had. We put a warm damp compress on it a few times a day and each time it cleared up within 24 hours.

Don't be afraid to call your pedi and ask though.

  • I am lurking from 2nd Tri, but my best friends DD had a clogged tear duct and it was exactly like you are describing.  The pedi told they usually clear themselves up and DD is now 5 months old and it is pretty much gone.  Good Luck!

  • I never used anything for it, it eventually went away pedi showed me a way to massage the corners of the eyes to help.

  • Pedi said to use a warm washcloth but to let her know if it gets too out of control and we can do the drops.  It seems to be getting better.

  • Yeah, my LO had his left tear duct plugged when he was born.  It was just crusty for a few weeks when he woke up.  We had to clean it out with a warm washcloth.  It never bothered him but yes sometimes the eyelashes get stuck together and he couldn't open his eye LOL.  Our pedi said we could massage the duct a bit with the tip of our finger or we could just let it be until it matured.  It went away around 5 weeks.  Now no more eye pookies!

Yes I would call just incase ...my dd eye wasn't red either.  it wasn't greenish either it had more of like a creamy yellow look to it

DD had this as well, pedi prescribed erythromicine (sp?) which is an antibiotic ointment to put in her eye.  Cleared it up in just a couple of days.  If it were me, and it was, I'd call just in case.

  • Maybe it's allergie? My son had the exact same thing until a few days ago. We went to the beach for 2 weeks and the 1st day we were there his eye started doing that. Watery, clumpy, etc. I thought it was a blocked tear duct. But as soon as we got home it went away. I guess there was just something in the beach house that was bothering it. It was weird.
  • The tear duct still isn't opened. Pedi gave me eye drops when it was greenish-yellowish. DS left tear duct barely opened this week. I was beginning to worry because the pedi told us that if it didn't open by his 4 month checkup, we would have to see the eye dr. we massaged it and it opened fine on its own.
