Swaddle Question

We're trying to drop the swaddle, I feel like he's ready, he's a solid night time sleeper, he doesn't use it for naps, and even though he is cat napping (always has) he's doing a really good job of going down for naps at his part-time daycare without anything.

I've tried doing the one arm out deal and it really bothers him, he becomes very determined to find the other arm!  So I'm considering just going cold turkey and putting him in a sleep sac instead.  Have any of you tried this or have other suggestions?

Re: Swaddle Question

  • We just got rid of the swaddle a few weeks ago.  It did take a little time though.  We also were able to do naps without it before we could get him to sleep at night without it and the 1 arm thing was pointless.

I would either put him down without a swaddle at all and if he woke up within an hour I would go in and swaddle him up and put him back down.  He would always get his arms free within a short time but he still slept better.  Or sometimes I would swaddle him with both arms free from the beginning and that actually worked better I think because he felt the snugness around his body still.  Then eventually we just stopped using it completely.  Maybe about three weeks total?

  • We had the same issue at 4 months and moved to using a swaddle me instead of a blanket.  Once she broke out of that, I gave up,  that was at 5 months and we transitioned to a sleep sack cold turkey. We do that at bedtime an a light blanket over her at nap time. She didn't have any issue at all with it. We still use the sleep sack and I am really happy with it. She loved to be swaddled, even at nap time, so I was really worried about it, but she did fine. I think everything at this point is just trial and error.
