i need to go pick up my ds and also make dinner for a friend and her family (they just had a new baby). the trip to get ds will take about 10-15 minutes and the dinner needs about 45 minutes in the oven. i am not the most paranoid (or careful) person and thus i'm somewhat considering starting the dinner while i go get him. dh is not here but if he was he would think i was CRAZY. if he was here, i'd just do it and tell him what was going on, and he would just stay in his office and keep working anyway.
is this a really bad idea or would you do it?
Re: leave for 10 minutes w/ oven on?
Turn it up about 50-100 degrees, let it get to that temp, then turn it off and go run your errand. It will still be hot enough when you get back.
I'm more paranoid than my firefighter DH, and even he wouldn't leave the house with the oven on (unless he forgot, which I wouldn't put past him
).
I even unplug the toaster when it's not in use, so my answer would be no.
I think the closest I would come is doing what the pp suggested, turning it on and letting it start to cook, and then turning it off. In 10-15 minutes, it will stay hot enough to cook the food, but at least the oven won't actually be on.
