Urinary tract infection?

Has anybody's LO had a UTI?  We have just gotten over our first one and doctor is referring us to a urologist for more tests.  She says it is most likely and anatomy problem that has caused it.  I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this or the tests (VCUG and ultrasound) and can give this nervous mommy some insight.

Thanks!

Re: Urinary tract infection?

  • Wish I could help.  My SD had those done, but I wasn't around yet, so I don't know what all is involved.

My older DD did have a problem with UTIs for awhile, but it was just a matter of us switching to absolutely NO bubble baths, and not using soap when washing her bits.  (The irritation of the soap apparenty caused the UTIs.)

  • I was wondering about the bubble baths, and hoping maybe that was all that caused it.  I really don't want to put LO through the tests if it is not necessary.  But pedi REALLY thinks it is needed.  (I kinda argued with her Embarrassed)

  • We went through a UTI when DD was 2 months old. We had the VCUG and U/S done. Neither one was too bad. I'm assuming you've already done the cathater thing.. that's really the worst part, and DD didn't even seem too bothered by it.

Our pedi ordered the tests "to be on the safe side." She didn't think it was anything serious, but just wanted to be sure. The tests all came back fine. After a bout with antibiotics she was all cleared up and has been UTI free since (knock on wood).

Good luck! It's not too bad =)

  • I'm sorry- I am no help.  I opened this because I just had one, but I am wondering...How did you know that your LO had a UTI?

  • My LO had a VCUG and ultrasound Monday and was dx with kidney reflux.  I was shocked, I too thought that the tests were unnecessary.  It is very important to get the tests done to check for the reflux.  I meet tomorrow with my daughters pedi to discuss what we do from here.  I believe she will be on a prophylactic antibiotic until she outgrows the reflux.  Good Luck with the tests.

We actually woke up the morning of her 2month appt. and DD had a fever. B/c of the fever they ran a coule tests and found the UTI. But, some symptoms would be smelly urine, more yellow urine, fussy baby, and fever.

She was running a fever with no other symptoms.  The pedi did blood work and found out she had an infection.  Then we had to do all kinds of tests to figure out where the infection was.  It was awful!

  • I am hoping for reflux cause the other means surgery Sad  How did your LO do with the tests?

  • She did great with the ultrasound.  The VCUG was a little more difficult.  I think it was because she had to be still, which is very difficult at this age.   I'll know more tomorrow but from what I understand with VUR there are 5 different stages.  Usually only stages 4 and 5 require surgery or cases where the antibiotic does not keep them uti free.
