Anyone highlight their own hair?

If you have, what do you use and how do you do it? Especially doing the back of your head. How can you see to do it?
I always do mine in a salon, but after it's said and done, it cost almost about $145 with tip (color, style, and deep conditioning).
I want to save some money, and try it myself.
Any advice?

  • Are you highlighting or coloring the whole thing? For coloring, you just rub well into roots and then down. I've only highlighted once at home with the help of a friend who walked around me and put foils in. I wouldn't try to highlight on my own.

  • Do you have a friend that can help you? We used to do it when we were younger. Just go to the beauty supply store. Get one of those caps with the little holes that you pull hair through. And you can probably ask them which product is best for what you are looking for. However, you do run the risk of pulling too much hair through some of the holes and having uneven highlights. That's why I just suck it up and pay the money at the salon.

    Just highlights.

Nicole- You might be right. (sigh) I may need to suck it up and go to the salon. My sister is decent with hair, but she has issues with highlights so until she gets better (she's in school right now for it), I don't want to risk it. ?

  • To be honest it is really bad idea. I tried it a few times in college and I always ended up in the salon to get it fixed.  All over color is another story, I do demi permanent myself on a fairly regular bases.
