Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Since you all have older LOs now...

was there a "switch" when your LO started doing more "bigger" stuff...or was it more gradual?  I don't know if this makes much sense...I hope it does.  B/c I look at your LO's ages and read some of the stuff they're doing and can't imagine (I can, it's just hard) DS doing some of those things in a few months.  Smile

  • I know I didn't believe it either.  Then all of a sudden he went from a baby to a big boy.

It is amazing how much they change in such a short time.

  • I think 18 months was the magic number when he went from baby/toddler to full on toddler. It really has been night and day. He's talking a lot, can walk when we go to stores etc, can eat whole foods, is into more "big kid" activities like coloring and bubbles, etc.
  • I wrote the same post when DS was about your DS's age.  There seemed to be a big leap in language and socio-emotional intelligence between 12-13 months old.  DS suddenly got a lot more interested in communicating and interacting with us. I think this is one of the reasons that a lot of kids experience small sleep problems at 12 months old.  They're going through the same thing DS did.

Since then, he has been learning things at warp speed though, so who knows?

ETA:  Also, remember that even at this age, one month still makes a huge difference.  I've always looked at older kids and had trouble imagining DS doing the stuff they did.  When he was 5 months old, I saw a 9 month old crawling and rolling around, and actually playing with toys instead of eating them and could only think of how DS wouldn't ever be able to do all of that by then.  Big Smile

  • Right around the 14 month range, I noticed a major shift.
One day, I went to get him from his crib, and he looked like a grown boy instead of a baby.?
He started climbing things, wanting to play outside, wanting to talk more and expressed himself more, and just acted like a little boy in general.?
    It was very surreal.?
Each day, I discover something new. He either says something new, or will try something new.?
    It's fun. : )

this is when i felt that way with aidan. sawyer still seems like a "baby" at 14 months. but i remember 18 months being "wow! youre a full blown kid now!"

  • I think so much happens at once around 18 months.  It's like you start watching them constantly change overnight.  Every day I will watch DD do something new and think, "You know how to do that?  Really!?"

  • I agree w/ pp.  Right around 18 months, something just clicked. He started talking more, doing a lot more "big boy" things.  Sometimes I look at him and I swear I can see the 3 y.o. he's going to be!

  • I don't remember when the shift actually started but every single day there is something new.  It's crazy.

There are so many moments when I look at her and think "where did she hear/see that?!"

    It's a fun age!!

  • I know what you mean it's so hard to imagine.  A little over a month ago she took a couple steps on her own and now she is full on walking and standing up from the ground without pulling up on anything and carrying things around.  It's just so crazy how much they change in a short period of time!
  • Almost. Especially verbally. He'll go through a few days where he's saying so much more. For example, over the weekend my friend Cori was over and I was trying to get Adam to say Cori. He wouldn't. Then yesterday I was on the phone with her and I jokingly said, Adam, say hi to Cori, and he said "Hi Cori."

Also, yesterday he said "light on" when we turned on the light in his room, said "soap" when DH pulled out the soap during his bath, said "let's go Connor" during our play date with his friend Connor and a few other things. That was in a single day. Not all days are like this, but it was amazing.
