Introducing peanut butter

At what age should I introduce peanut butter? ?Some say 1 year and others say 3 years. ?We don't have any family history of food allergies, so I am wondering if I can give it to DS now. ?It's one of my favorite things and I would like to be able to give it to him as well.

What are your thoughts on this? ?TIA!?

Re: Introducing peanut butter

  • We started around 1.  She loves it and has not had any issues.  Pedi approved.

  • i'm waiting until at least 2 years but it has not as much to do with allergies as it does with choking.  we have no history of allergies on either side, so we're not too paranoid about that, however I think swallowing PB for a kid could be difficult.

  • We started at 11 months with no issues. I'm in the sooner rather than later camp.

  • Every pediatrician seems to have a different opinion on this.  My Dr. said 2 years, so we're waiting until DD is 2.
  • Good point about the choking hazard. When we give PB to DD we put in on warm toast so it melts some.

That's one of my fears too! ?I am terribly worried about him choking.

  • We gave it to DD at a year. Pedi approved, we have no history of allergies on either side and pedi has the opinion of sooner than later also.
  • We did it at 17 months.  DD turned out to be allergic, and we ended up in the ER.  I'm actually glad that I had introduced it that early...now we know.  I spent many a night after her reaction thinking about all the times that she could have come into contact with it, and how it could have turned out badly.

My only suggestion is to try during the day...you'd hate to be watching for a reaction at night.

  • DD has had it twice already and had no issues with it.  We have no family issues with peanut allergies so I felt comfortable moving ahead with it.

What was your DD's reaction like? ?What should I be looking for? ?He's never had a reaction to anything and I've actually never seen anyone with a food allergy before.?

  • We did at one year.  DD loves her some PB&J!
  • Our pedi said 1 year is a good time to introduce the "high allergen" foods. We have no history of allergies. I was worried about it and I made sure we had benedryl in the house before I tried giving her pb, just in case.

We're really careful to spread pb thin (so it's easier to swallow) and always make sure she has a sippy cup of water to drink with it. She usually takes a sip after every bite when she is eating something sticky.

  • he started eating pb around 11 months

  • I was told 2 years.

But I have given him stuff with PB and chocolate and he has been fine.

My DS was accidently given a very small amount of peanut butter a few months ago and that's how we found out he was allergic.  He broke out in hives all over his body, hives on top of hives.  He was bright red and bumpy EVERYWHERE.  Our pedi told us we didn't need to go to the ER unless he was vomiting or having trouble breathing.  Thankfully he was just itchy and after some Benadryl his rash was gone within 24 hours.
