If your DD has had a yeast infection ...

What did it look like and what did your pedi suggest for a remedy?

Lily is taking antiobiotics for an ear infection. I called the pedi yesterday and told the NP Lily is grabbing at her crotch area and that I noticed a tiny red spot on the inside. The NP said, "Sounds like a yeast infection!" and told me to get some OTC meds used for treating women's yeast infections, and to put a little of it on the affected area.

Is it just me, or would this make you a little nervous? They haven't seen the area, and I'm just not keen on putting this stuff on there with the NPs hunch. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'm just wondering what your experiences have been.

TIA

Re: If your DD has had a yeast infection ...

  • My DD had one and it looked like prickly heat, sort of. I tried and OTC antifungal and it didn't work so I had to take her in for a prescription.

  • I have a DS but he had a yeast infection a few weeks ago. Don't use wipes, baby powder or diaper rash cream, according to my pedi all this makes it worse. Also, lots of naked time.

My pedi didn't see DS, I just call & described the rash to them & the told me to use athletes foot cream & it worked like a charm.  So, I would go a head & use the womens stuff. It could clear up by the end of the day w/that.

  • Yes it would. We had to get a script ointment for DD. It's basically a diaper cream w/ antifungal ingrediants in it. Expensive stuff.

I'd take her in & get her checked out to be sure thats what it is before treating it w/ an otc. Dumb NP. Grown women shouldn't even self medicate if they've never been diagnosed w/ a YI before. Why would you do that w/ a child? Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

  • My DD has had two, but both were on her butt. The doctor wanted to see her before giving medication for a YI the first time, though. After they saw it, they put her on a cream. The second time they called in the cream (it was a weekend) but still wanted me to come in on monday. My Dr. told me YI get misdiagnosed a lot, so they like to see the patient if possible.
  • per recommendations here, and conferring with pedi, made a mix of gynelotrimin (no longer called that, clortrimazol or something), 40% zinc oxide desitin and cortizone for itching.  cleared up in a coupple days.

  • Thanks for the replies. Glad I'm not crazy (at least on this issue!).

I was asking my neighbor for her thoughts -- two DDs who've had YIs before -- and she was offering me her RXs for it. Like I want YOUR prescriptions. My goodness. I am paranoid when it comes to giving antibiotics, but holy cow it seems like people are doling this stuff out like it's candy.

  • It usually looks like raised red bumps. We used OTC Monistat on DD and it worked better and faster than the Rx the doc gave.

  • If she needs some relief in the meantime, you can actually use some plain yogurt (no sugar/fruit/etc. added of course!). Also, it's a good time to get some probiotics in her, as in feeding her yogurt, because antibiotics kill all the good bacteria that keep away things like yeast infections. Too much yeast in the digestive tract can also cause some irritation. (With having taken antibiotics, I'm sure that's why the pedi and neighbor are so confident it's yeast).

Thanks for this. I've been giving her yogurt everyday to try to ward off a YI. But are you saying use plain yogurt on the affected area?
