Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Are there any words you spell in front of DC?

Sometimes we have to spell "bath".  If he hears it, he gets all excited and runs upstairs and waits by the tub.  If I say it sooner than I'm ready to give the bath, a meltdown ensues.  We also have to spell "Barney" sometimes.  He's like crack in our house.

 How about you?

Re: Are there any words you spell in front of DC?

  • We don't spell, but we definitely have codes for several words.  We say "PG" for playground, "the white stuff" for milk, "red vehicle" for his Cozy Coupe, "grass cutter" for his popping mower, and "big grey animal" for elephant (DS is obsessed with YouTube videos of them).
  • Loading the player...
  • B-l-u-e-b-e-r-r-i-e-s

He goes completely crazy, runs to the fridge and pants like a dog until I give him one :)

  • Yes, for the same reasons as you said, we have to spell Banana, Out, and Binky.
  • I've spelled a couple cuss words before. Last week I was talking to my sister on the phone, saw that DS was coming in the room and instead said "I just don't understand why your roommate is being such a B-I-T-C-H!"
My sister laughed at me. lol
  • Tractor

    Boat

    Binky

    Outside

If we even come CLOSE to saying any of these words instead of spelling. We're in trouble.

  • 'snack', especially if we are getting in the car. He thinks car rides are for eating. I really don't care if he eats in my car, but MH loves his car and is trying to keep it that way.
  • I have to spell b-o-t-t-l-e or else he starts whining and wants one!! I also spell brat if I am talking about him being cranky sometimes b/c I can't call him that in front of him!!! LOL
  • bath is a bad one at our house too, we usually say go for a swim or get the kiddo wet lol otherwise he freaks if we are too slow. we also have to call his bottle a "you know what" or he goes crazy.
  • DD's room. He loves going in there. If I casually say "I left the phone in DD's room," DS takes off running. We always keep her door closed b/c she has too much stuff that he can get into, but he'll open it anyways.

ETA: We don't spell it though, just creatively avoid saying it:)

  • we have to spell 'cracker' or else he'll chant cracker over and over again until he's had at least 8

  • we don't spell we just say it in spanish.

  • Banana. He is like a junkie with them. I've taken to trying to hide them because if he sees one he has a fit. We have trouble spelling it out and not chanting it Gwen Stefani style.
  • outside, shoes, Jack (as in his favorite, Jack's Big Music Show). Oh, and banana.

If you say outside or shoes before you're ready to actually put on shoes and go outside, you get rewarded with a tantrum.

  • Cookie, milk, and walk.
  • Bottle. He is obsessed and wil cry whine and beg when he hears the word. We are trying hard to wean him off, so we try to not say the word (say milk instead) or spell it.
