Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

don't know what to think about my daycare

we picked this lady b/c she seemed great at first (don't they all). I get the feeling it's just complete free play all day. Granted they are only there for 2 days/3 days a week I wanted them to have more structure through the day.

Grady is only 3 months but my 14 month old I would like to see learning activities.

How can I approach her on this? What can I suggest? What do your kids do at daycare? (someone mentioned to me a program called fire flies...?)

thanks

Re: don't know what to think about my daycare

  • The issue with suggesting something like this to a provider, is they may get defensive and think you are judging them.?
If they don't already do this, then you may have to find someone else that does, unfortunately.?
That is the first question I ask the people I interview:
"Do you teach weekly lessons? If so, what?"

My sitter does, and I can see that it's working because DS is learning his alphabet letters already. He comes home and says them and points them out.

I guess it depends on your sitter's attitude. If you think this person will listen to you and do the lessons, then by all means ask. If they are more set in their ways, then I would probably look for a new provider. Just because you present this provider with these lesson ideas does not mean they will actually do them with your child.?

  • I am so thankful for my daycare. Dd does arts and crafts everyday. She brings projects home everyday and has little homework, like sing abc's . SHe has sharing time everyday for 1/2 hour. They have story book reading everyday. Every wednesday they have movie day which is a1/2 episode of something haha. 1st friday of the month is a pizza party. Next friday is pajama day. They have picture day coming up. It's been too cold to go out now. But she's learning sooo much and she loves it. I think you should ask her what do thy do during the day in a nice way and find out.

  • You are probably going to have to switch to a daycare center or find a home daycare that will provide learning activities.  I'm willing to bet your daycare lady would not be willing to do these type of activities.  We are going through the same thing with our in-home daycare and DS will be switching at age 2 to a daycare center where activities will be more structured.

  • Does she send anything home telling what they have done throughout the day? I have a small daycare in my home and I send home something with my kids to let their parents know what we've done for the day. A few examples of things we do are.....story time, arts and crafts, singing, coloring pages, free play. Right now I just have 3 yr olds so I will be ordering the fireflies curriculum, I've been checking this out lately, and it looks great! I'd just start by asking some questions. hth
