Sad / vent re: vbac

I had my annual OB appt. the other day with my WONDERFUL doc, who is part of a group who I was told (after my c-sect last year)is the only group of docs in my area who routinely perform VBAC deliveries.  I was so devastated following my section due to DS being breech... they assured me that all was well with my uterus, the surgery, etc. and that VBAC should be NO problem next time around.  So at my appt. the other day I brought that up to my doc, and he told me that the group very recently (August) underwent some changes, most of the docs in the group left to become hospital docs instead of part of the private practice, and that they can no longer do VBAC deliveries, since there is no guarantee that MY doc would actually be the one to deliver me when the time came.  I'm not planning to get pg again for about another year, but this is SO UPSETTING to me!!!  The one consolation for having to have the csect. last time was that I could try for a VBAC next time, and now it's looking like I won't be able to after all.  So sad....  Crying

  • I'm sorry you got this news. However, you can have a VBAC no matter which Dr delivers you. They cant force you to have a c-section. That's one of your protected rights as a patient (no non-consensual medical procedures). Also, have you considered using a midwife instead of an OB? If you REALLY want a VBAC (and it sounds like you do) then dont give up yet. Check the site www.ican-online.org for some great info about VBACs, especially in situations where a Dr is saying they dont do them.

  • Thank you for the link, Emilie... (actually, it doesn't work but I googled it and found it... it's ican-online.ORG.)  Wink

I will look into this for sure... I am ADAMANT about at least trying for a vbac. The new group actually does consist of my doc, one of the other original docs from the group, and a nurse/midwife.  The problem, as I understand it, is that if I went into labor and one of those three was not on call at the hospital.... I don't know... I wasn't super clear on the details, since the conversation happened at the very end of my appt. and I figured I could pursue it further when getting pg. is actually closer.  But I will read up on this issue and I've already got ican open in a tab to read as soon as I post this!  Thank you again!!!

  • They can't force you to have a c-section.  It is YOUR choice.  I would look for another Dr. or MW who is VBAC friendly.

  • I would keep looking as well.  Just be aware that if the time comes and you make it clear you're adamant about a VBAC, your doctor may no longer be able to give you care (if their malpractice insurance does not cover a VBAC).  So, I'd try to have selected a VBAC-friendly doctor before or very early into the pregnancy.

  • I would call the hospital you would be delivering at to find out what their protocol is. As a VBAC hopeful, I am doing everything possible to avoid another C/S. I hope it all works out for you!
  • I'm starting to put out feelers now... there is no local chapter/member of ICAN.  I was told last year that my doctor was part of the ONLY group in town who did VBACs... that group is no longer together, and the structure is different, so my OB said they aren't doing them anymore.... that things might change in the next year before I get pregnant again, but I'm worried that there might not be anyone who would do it.  I'm not in to home birth... I just want a hospital VBAC.  :(

I agree with this!  When I get pregnant again I will only go to a doc that will let me have a VBAC.   Even if that means switiching half way thru I will.

So, just go to the hospital when you are in labor and refuse the c-section.  They can't force you.

    You can do it Mama!!!
