My son had his finger severed in a friend's door this weekend.
My son loves to play with doors but this actually wasn't the case this time. He was standing at the front door, and our friend didn't want him to get out (and go towards the pool), so he shut the door and picked him up. Problem was, DS's hand was near the hinges, and when he picked him up, the finger stayed put. Sorry to be graphic.
It was a long night of ambulance, ER, surgery, and so on. Prognosis is good for the reattachment. He's in a full hand and arm cast right now and pretty heavily medicated.
Lessons to take from this? Well, we had had a couple of drinks. Of course, it was an immediate sobering moment, but the 911 operator told us not to drive because they don't want freaked out parents trying to drive (which we definitely were).
Another lesson is we had no idea where the nearest hospital/ER was. We were visiting friends for the first time in an unfamiliar area.
The third lesson? I guess that accidents happen no matter how much you watch your kid and how careful you think you're being.
18 months and already in a cast.
Now how to keep a kid entertained who lives at the beach or pool...
Re: My worst fear came true...DS was injured.
omg my heart is in my stomach. that poor baby! i'm sorry you all had to go through that but i am so glad that he will be ok.
thank you for posting though. thats a very good point about knowing where the nearest hospitals are. ?
Oh I'm so sorry. The poor little guy. However bad this is it's much better to loose a finger than a life if he had gotten into the pool. Glad that they where able to reattache it.
good luck with it all. So scary to think tha tin an instant something like that can happen.
As for entertainment... They do make tape to use that maybe you can cover the cast with plastic and he can get "wet" if needed.
OMG.
I dont know what I would have done. Lucky though that they're able to reattach it. I hope he heals well!
Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry that happened to your DS! I hope for a speedy recovery for your DS! Some positive news, though - a co-worker of mine's little boy had his hand pretty much crushed in a workbench vice and had to have multiple surgeries, casts, etc. and now has full use of his hand again (I think he was 2 or 3). So, doctors are amazing and technology has advanced so much that everything will be as good as new in no time!
Again, sorry that this happened!
I'm sorry and hope your son heals fast.
Many years ago I actually severed my brothers finger in a door when he was two. Now I couldn't even pick which finger it was. HTH Good Luck
I am so sorry! I wouldve flipped, I am not good in emergency situations. I will think about you when my boys are roughing around the doors and do better about making sure they don't.
Sorry to give everyone the heebies. I know it sounds gross, but when it happened, it wasn't that gross. I guess we went into a mechanical mode. We were scared but acted very calm outwardly.
The surgeon said we did everything right (apply pressure, keep the digit cold but not directly on ice.)
I gave DS a pacifier which helped to calm him down. I let dad hold him because he was strong enough to keep him from moving around. We sang and rocked him until the ambulance showed up. Of course he was upset until the ambulance showed up...then he was super excited that they were there for him!
Thinking about it afterwards definitely gives us a shudder. We see the reaction people have when we tell them what happened (including the ER docs...lol) and it's the same every time. You never think you'd wish for a broken limb or a cut that needs stitches. Something that heals with no lasting damage.
Our friend (that picked him up from the door) is a basket case. We of course don't blame him, it was an accident. But I can imagine how I would feel if I was in his shoes...
Sorry I'm rambling...it's nice to find an avenue to vent. Thanks for all of the good thoughts. I will keep you updated!

Really!!!!! I think I would have passed out... Glad to hear he's doing so well given the circumstances. Good job staying conscious! Hope he has a speedy recovery!
OMG (((hugs))). Plastic bags or hopefully the cast is gortex (sp). My brother lived a summer once with a plastic bag around his cast so he could swim. The next time he ended up with a cast it was made out of gortex (the outside looked the same the inside was made out of the stuff that keeps raincoats waterproof) and he was able to swim and play without wrapping it up.
GL and hope he doesn't have to keep it on for long
I am very sorry about your son. I also had an injury experience so I can commiserate. DD was bit by a friend's dog in the face when we were out camping. Everyone was watching and we had been around that dog before and things were fine. We too learned all the same lessons you did--didn't know where an ER was (we used our GPS, thank god), and yes accidents happen, no matter how preventable. Another lesson that you will soon learn (as I did), is this experience will leave emotional and physical scars on both of you. I still have anxiety about taking her in public and I feel like I have to explain to everyone what happened. So we must learn to love and admire our children despite their scars and imperfections.
Good luck to both of you and his recovery. Page me if you need someone to talk to.
