Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When were you done with bottles?

WinkExcept the bedtime one, it seems like a lot of us keep that one around for a bit longer. My DS is only 10 months, not really interested in a whole lot of table foods yet, not really interested in purees anymore, but loves his 4 bottles a day (and the occassional overnight bottle). Everyone acts like he will be done with bottles at 12 months. I don't see it happening until he starts showing more interest in table foods. I am not really worrying about it but I just wonder what everyone else did.

Re: When were you done with bottles?

  • We switched to sippy/straw cups at the same time we switched to whole milk - at one year.

  • DS only has a bottle at bedtime, sippy cups throughout the day.  He does like food though, so I have trouble getting the recommended amount of formula in him.  (he was EBF until I got pg again)  I think he might even like the sippy for the bed time bottle, but I haven't tried that yet.

  • We were done with all but the bedtime bottle by 12 months.  Done with the bedtime bottle by 13 months.

  • Almost 18 months and we still give a bottle at bedtime.

  • My son was one on Friday and we planned on switching over.  He used to drink out of them just fine with juice during snack but now he will let the milk dribble down his chin.  I am going to start putting whole milk in the bottle and then switch over.  Does anyone have suggestions on spittiing milk or juice out after he used to drink just fine?

Same here. We just moved so I think trying to switch him would be pretty dramatic on him.

  • DS is still on bedtime bottle. Pedi said no big deal, sippy cups aren't any better / worse and as long as he's not cruising around all day with a bottle in his mouth, not an issue. He was done with the daytime bottles at 12 months. Pretty much ditched them on his own though.
  • DD STILL drinks from bottles for her milk. She refuses to drink milk out of a cup (but is fine with drinking water out of it). I had a stand-off with her for almost 5 days and she won. She doesn't walk around with it though. Sits and drinks it at her milk time and hands me the bottle when she's done so I am not worried.
  • Wait, we're supposed to stop using bottles?  j/k

My pedi said she'd like her to be off of bottles by 18 months.  We're on day 2 of cold turkey to sippy cups (although I caved and gave her a bedtime bottle last night).  She's had no milk today, and yesterday she had an 8oz bottle at bedtime, and that was it.  She won't drink anything but water out of a cup, so I'm kind of at a loss.

Not every baby is ready at 12 months, so don't stress about that deadline too much.

  • Done with bottles at 12 months.  My mom told me what a hard time she had with me so I was so worried, but it was easy as can be.  Way easier then the paci.  We just started giving her sippys and making it less bottles and on her bday we were done.  She didn't care at all.

  • DD still gets 3 bottles a day. Its how she falls asleep for naps and at night.
  • We just stopped using bottles a week ago, I found that the Nuby sippies that look kinda like water bottles were helpful in getting him to transition.

  • Both of my boys were off the bottle at 12 months. They were both on all table food before a year, and used a sippy well.
  • There is no way my 1 yr old is going to be done with bottles soon.  He uses sippy cups at meal time, but he has a bottle when he wakes up and bottle before bed and I won't wean him yet.  I already cut out naptime bottles and that took a while!!
