Clogged Duct vs. Mastitis

I think I may have one or the other. If you've had one or both, how could you tell the difference?

Re: Clogged Duct vs. Mastitis

  • w/ mastitis you get a fever a feel really sick.

  • If you have fever and/or body aches it's probably mastitis. Also if it is hot to the touch or looks red it's likely mastitits. Call your doctor anyway because plugged ducts tend to look like mastitis and mastitis tends to look like plugged ducts.

That is no fun, hope you feel better soon.

  • I was plagued w/ clogged ducts for the first 3.5 months. I knew it was mastitis when I had a plugged duct and flu-like symptoms.

  • I've never had mastitis, but the plugged duct felt like I was engorged all the time and needed to pump.  (The 2x I had one I was OOT so I was only able to pump) Even though I had just finished pumping 20 minutes before... But, when I pumped, hardly anything came out.  There is a tender spot too, but no flu like symptoms like with mastitis.

  • You can get mastitis from not relieving a clogged duct.  I got it 4 times in the course of 2 weeks.  It's not fun at all.  Chills, muscle aches, my temp was around 102 degrees, it literally felt like the flu.  My breast was also BRIGHT red over the area.
