SAHM do you get a weekly allowance?

Re: SAHM do you get a weekly allowance?

  • Hell no.

I buy what we need and DH doesn't say a word.  He's just happy he's not doing the grocery shopping and that we have food in the house.  I pay all the bills with OUR money.  There is no his money vs. my money in this house.

We discuss bigger purchases before they happen, but that's it.

  • The budget that we do includes ALL incidentals (personal grooming i.e. haircuts, mani/pedis; clothes allowances; entertainment expenses).  So the mad money that we both get every month doesn't need to be very much.  It isn't an allowance that he *gives* me, it is what we've worked out that we both get every month.  Everything is split 50/50 in this house.
  • No, but I am very conscious about what I buy.  I am a proud coupon clipper and am always on the hunt for a bargain!

murphy---LOVE your siggy!  Hoping for a win @ BC this weekend.  Did you graduate from FSU?  I did in '01.

  • I do have a grocery budget - not a grocery allowance. With our credit card debt and the medical bills we still haven't paid off, we don't have a lot of room to play.

    So disappointing this weekend....

Yea!  Another Nole!  Yep, it was a sad one this weekend, but hopefully we'll have a win this weekend.  I'm surrounded by Gators and they love to rub it in!  I always remind them that when I was at FSU, we won the National Championship!!!

Exactly!! That was my first year there, and I was in Chiefs so I actually got to be there...it was AMAZING! (Also amazing what has since happened to the Superdome and Michael Vick...but that is a different story!)

I think the wording allowance is probably just making people cringe.  If the question was do you have a weekly budget, you probably would get better responses.

This.  Budget?  Yes.  Allowance?  No.  I find the idea of an allowance insulting.

  • I do!  I love allowance day!  Of course, it is not set in stone...if I need more, I just ask or go to the ATM.  It works for us...1950-ish or not!

  • UM NO! One of us always goes to the grocery store and buys whatever we need/want. We discuss big purchases before we buy something! I think i would have to pick my jaw up off the floor if my hubby ever "gave me an allowance!"
  • yes, for several reasons - 1) admittedly i can and do justify spending every last cent i get my hands on and would put us in the poor house and 2) my DH manages our finances including our bank account, i have a seperate bank account that we put $ into every week for whatever i need/want, that way there isn't a chance that i spend $ at the store (even an insignificant amount) and put our account in the negative.  I don't like it all the time but honestly that's because i have a spending problem.
