RP: Looking for tips/advice on starting solids

We got the go ahead to start solids with our girls at their last appt and I am just wondering what you started with and how quickly you moved along to the next thing?  The doc suggested starting with rice cereal and/or oatmeal and then as we moved into veggies to only start one food a week to make sure the girls didn't have a reaction...We tried giving them some rice cereal and they didn't seem all that kean on it....I am not in any rush to get them eating solids, but I am just wondering how others started and progressed with them?

Re: RP: Looking for tips/advice on starting solids

  • we started A on rice cereal about 10 days ago.  he was okay w/ it til i started intro'ing veggies & fruit w/ it & now i think wonders what the pastey crap is that i try to feed him.  LOL! have u tasted the rice cereal?  it's AWFUL!  its like eating paste or paper.

anyway. after a few days i started on some fruit.  tried some veggies this weekend. he's okay w/ it but not too keen so i'm not really pushing it right now.  his pedi said we can intro 1 new fruit/veggie a day b/c we can always back up if he has an allergy.  dh and i are not allergic to much & i think ds is pretty hearty too, if u know what i mean.  i'm not doing 1 a day but knowing that i don't have to wait if i don't want to is good.

it takes time, just have patience & have fun.  make sure to have a camera handy!

  • We're doing exactly what your dr recommended. We started with rice cereal for a week, and each day I'd make it a little less runny until it was the same consistency as the baby food purees.  Then we did carrots for a week, and now we're on sweet potato this week.  I'm using the Earth's Best kind because the little jars are easier for me to manage.  He usually nurses when I get home from work, then has a 40ish-minute nap, then we do his solids.  He only eats about a 1/2 tablespoon, and sometimes he's into it and sometimes he's distracted and doesn't really want to eat.

Our dr said not to worry about it if he doesn't eat anything (food), even for a couple days, because he's getting the nutrition from the BM; eating solids at this age is just to learn how.

  • We started with oatmeal and EC wasn't too into it until I added in sweet potatoes.  So we did oatmeal for a week, then added in sweet potatoes.  After that I started adding in foods a bit faster, every 3 days and honestly I've even given a new food everyday.  She was constipated so I gave her prunes the day after she tried peas.

I think the main thing is to just have fun with it, they're testing out foods and you don't really have to worry about the nutritional value just yet.  I'm not saying to feed them french fries but you know what I mean.
