DD got hers for her 2nd bday. I really recommend getting ones with a "needle" (we have the Alex ones from Target, and the "needle" is a 1/4" thick wooden dowel). The needle makes it possible for it to be an independent activity. DD loves them. We have several different sets, but we always use the needle from the Alex set.

We don't have actual beads, but we do have lacing cards which DS enjoys. He also really likes to string Cheerios onto a pipe cleaner - a snack and activity in one!
Re: Lacing beads...what age?
She doesn't have them, but I would think about 3 years or older would be good.
I think my niece got them at 3 or 3 1/2 years as a gift (either Christmas or her birthday).
