Swaddled at Daycare but not at home

We stopped swaddling at home at 3 months b/c DS hated it, would squirm like crazy, wake up immediately upon being put into the crib, not settle himself, and would wake up fighting mad to get out of the swaddle.  We soon figured out that he settles and sleeps much better on tummy.

I told all of this to daycare, verbally and in written documentation.  Yet, they insist on swaddling him for naps.  (His naps by the way at daycare are 45 minutes max versus 2 hour naps at home).  The note on his daycare sheet on friday said, "He LOVES the swaddle."  So, I gave it a try over the weekend and he absolutely hated it.

Should I let daycare do what daycare thinks is easiest for DS ... perhaps he does love the swaddle there????? ... or should I insist that they not swaddle him?  Swaddling certainly isn't hurting him and the swaddle during day/not at night isn't adversely affecting our night sleep.  I'm just perplexed that they think he likes to be swaddled?

Re: Swaddled at Daycare but not at home

  • That's kind of weird...

Honestly, I would tell them not to swaddle him anymore. But, it sounds like this is just a personal preference kind of thing.

We stopped around 3.5 months and I can't imagine swaddling her again at this size / age. Doesn't seem necessary anymore.

  • where i worked, we swaddled even a few crawlers, because that was just what worked for them at school, but they didnt get swaddled at home. as for the short naps, its *hard* to get babies to nap long at school, esp with other kids around, so it might not just be because he is swaddled. it could be the noise.

also, babies are not allowed to sleep on their bellies unless its for medical reasons, so even with a note, really "by the books" centers wont allow it.

try spending some time in the class (around nap time.) see how they put him to nap, and see how he reacts...

some kids are totally different at school then they are at home ...
