Success after IF

How often do you cut your baby's nails?

Do you wait until there's a decent bit of white showing, because it's such a pain to do in the first place, and then feel bad when you see that they scratched themselves, or do you cut them pretty often to avoid there being any white nail so they really have no chance to scratch themselves?

If you couldn't tell, I'm in the former camp.  And I feel guilty.  But they're so squirmy!  And they're rarely napping in a position where I can get at their hands.  It's such a pain.  I've been doing it basically once a week.

  • i would say we wind up doing it every couple days...they grow so fast.
  • I do it about every other week unless his nails get particularly pointy and start scratching me as well as himself. I try to do it when he is eating or sleeping.

  • I just bite her nails.  The best time to do it was when I would breastfeed. Now that we're bottle feeding, it's harder to find the perfect time to do it.

  • this was my nemesis!!! Griffin would scratch his face nonstop b/c he got so fussy when he was trying to fall asleep. He still is, but somehow has figured out how not to scratch his face. I was obsessed with keeping his nails short, but yes, it was so hard! I couldn't for the life of me, figure out where he was getting this nail to scratch his face! I would inspect them and get every sharp or white part of nail I could get my clippers on. I became a master clipper...ha..ha. But Griffin also wore the socks on his hands nearly all the time, esp. after he cut himself right in the corner of his eye. I felt like the Horrible Mother from Hell that day. Hang in there, as they gain more control as they grow, they scratch alot less. Use the socks though, they worked great for Griffin. I just had to keep them on allll the time!
  • I HAAATE this and basically put it off as long as possible which is usually until I see they have scratched themselves or they start scratching me.  I know I'm awful but they fight me so bad and then, when I'm done I have to do it ALL OVER AGAIN on the other one.  UGH.
  • I do it once a week and the last couple nails are hard to do because now he fights me.

  • I actually do it every couple of days.  He likes to rub his eyes/head when he's tired, so he scratches himself if I don't.  He doesn't really fight me that badly anymore...maybe its because I do it so much!

  • twice a week with BOTH kids. Their nails grow fast!
  • I've never cut them.  I use one of those file blocks that they have at the nail salon.  I can usually get them down pretty good using that.

  • Usually once a week.  I used to turn on the tv and he would be mesmerized so I could cut his nails.  Recently that hasn't worked, but sitting on our front stoop so he can watch people/cars go by has, so that is what we do!  Not sure what we will do in the winter...maybe he will like the tv again?  This is the only time I turn on the tv around him!
