sleeping on tummy- is this dangerous?

Now that DS has discovered how to rollover- he's a machine! The problem is that he rolls over during the night and ends up sleeping however long on his tummy. DH is freaked out by it and is all ready to start checking on him during the night. We have one of those thingy-ma-jigs that block each side so supposedly DS wouldn't be able to rollover but he doesn't like it. I'm scared to death of SIDS (among my many other motherly fears) but would it be okay for him to just sleep "freestyle"?

  • He's fine.  Once they can roll over, you're fighting a losing battle to keep them on their backs.   That's the way it worked in our house at least.

Ditto.  Unless you want to set your own alarm all night long and keep rolling him back, it is a losing battle.  Both my kids prefer their tummies to sleep and once they learned to roll (Maggie at 6 mo and Molly at 4mo) that is how they slept.

  • My pediatrician said once they roll they can sleep any way they'd like.  My DD prefers her side.  Totally her mommy's daughter.
  • Warner did the exact same thing a couple months ago and it scared me to death. He still sleeps on his stomach every night and I've gotten used to it now, but I can totally understand your worries. There's really nothing you can do other than check on him. If he wants to sleep on his tummy he will (those sleep positioner things never worked for Warner either.) Maybe you can let your DH check on him as he feels comfortable for the first week or so, and then after that he'll realize that the baby is fine.

Ditto - both our girls slept on their tummies around 3-4 months.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • Ditto all PPs. I was all set to check on him every hour or so, but we got the okay from our pediatrician. It seems that once they figure out the rolling over thing, many babies realize they are more comfortable on their stomachs. Doesn't surprise me at all - I sleep on my tummy too!

  • you can probably also remove the sleep positioner from his crib
  • I'd go even further than Sofka and say you should remove the sleep positioner if he's rolling.
