You should try the Eco Friendly Family board, there's a wealth of knowledge on there. Here are a website to get you started though: https://theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com/
I do think that there is a cloth diaper store in DC but I don't know how great a selection there is (you'd have to google to find it, I don't know what it is off the top of my head) so you may or may not be able to look at different diapers in person before committing.
lurk on the EFF board and you will learn a ton. The most important thing that I've learned is that you really have to try things to figure out what you/the baby likes (which sucks since there are few local resources and you have to buy most stuff online). for instance, i'm glad i didn't stock up on prefolds and covers, because I hate them and they are too bulky on my narrow little man (i never would have predicted i would have a slender baby).luckily, there are lots of ways to get rid of used cloth diapers, like diaper swappers and hyena cart.
Abby's Lane is in NoVa and they have a great website with super fast, free shipping and also offer a cloth diaper 101 class once a month.
Ditto both pp's. EFF board is awesome as is Abby's Lane. There's also a Yahoo group called DCCDers. My experience with cloth so far has been great and we've been doing it since DD was born.
I did the Kissaluvs rental through Sunshine Diapers and LOVED it. Kissaluvs are, IMHO, the best newborn cloth diaper. We now use BumGenius at home (daycare won't do cloth, sadly). The EFF board was a great resource for me.

Also, this trial is highly recommended: https://www.jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10/tryclothfor10 as babies fit in different diapers better, so its nice to be able to figure out which works best for your child before committing money to one particular type of diaper.

Good luck!
