D.C. Area Babies

why is my baby so crazy?!

Warner is just getting more and more rambunctious in his crib. When he is waking up from a nap he rolls all over the place and a couple of times in the last two days while I'm getting stuff ready on the changing table he's whacked his head against the rails of the crib! So I'm thinking he's probably also done it when I'm not in there yet. We only have a breathable bumper, not a thick cushy one and we couldn't get a thick, cushy one because he is so all over the place, he often ends up sleeping with his face right up against the side of the crib.

I would hope that he's not strong enough to do any real damage, and I've checked him really carefully and there are no lumps or bruises, but still, it can't be good!

Any suggestions? What if I bought another breathable bumper and just doubled it up? I wonder if it would still be "breathable"...

Re: why is my baby so crazy?!

  • We're having the same problem! A bumper doesn't work with the design of our crib or otherwise I'd put one in there. We have some loveys and little stuffed animals in there and I'm hoping they protect her head, but poor kid keeps waking herself up. I know it's not all SIDS-approved, but after consulting with my pedi and others I think the little animals in there help and I wish I could do a bumper. Poor Warner!

  • Amelia does this all the time. We have had a cushy bumper since day one. I took it off around 6 months and then she was bumping her head on the rails but she has always been ok and when I told my pedi she did see any concerns for it since ever baby does it.

She is crazy when she plays and bumps her head constantly and she is fine.

I know it never sounds good when they bumo thier heads because it always sounds so loud! But I think he will be ok.

  • We have a thin bumper that is enough to prevent the bumping for now, but even that doesn't cut it once they start sitting and standing up in the crib so getting a thicker bumper is really only delaying the inevitable bumps they get from the rails.  Maybe roll up some blankets and put them on the edges for when you are in the room with him (and he is awake and ready to play) to prevent some of it and then take them out when you leave?
  • I'm not sure what to suggest besides a cushy bumper.  With both our girls we replaced the breathable bumper with a cushy one when they started wildly rolling around because they would bump their heads and wake up at night.  My preschooler still constantly bumps her head on her bed headboard - it's a wonder she hasn't scrambled her brains.
