Spent all day in ER

Friday started off very typical of me.  Up at 3:45 for work, at work by 6, did all of my normal stuff, but around 10 I went to the bathroom and noticed there was blood in the toilet.  I sat back down, wiped again and red blood, like the first or second day of my period was on the TP.  I honestly freaked.  Walked back to my office, and before I could even open the door, I broke down in tears.  Luckily 2 of co-workers were right there, one who is 3 weeks ahead of me in her pregnancy and one who had been through it before. They sat me down, had me call my OB, and before I could even get a call back from the OB, they had DC Fire/Paramedics on their way.  Talk about scary!  I was taken to GW by ambulance and had a police escort following us.  Guess thats what I get when I work for a police dept who happens to be like a second family to me.

I spent 6 hours there, had an internal done which the dr said my cervix was still closed so I breathed a sigh of relief after that, but they wanted to send me home and I requested to have an ultrasound done to ensure everything was absolutely fine.  They have me an internal & external ultrasound and I got to really see the baby for the first time.  Tiny yet so amazingly formed and moving around like crazy.  It looked like the baby was in there using my uterus as a springboard.  DH wasnt able to go back w/ me but they sent me back to my room w/ 3 pictures to take home.  I was also given the RH negative shot in my badonkadonk - which I asked the nurse to give it to DH after I saw the size of the needle!  Not so lucky on that request, but the baby was doing great.  Still no idea what caused the bleeding though.

I was able to get in touch with the on call OB friday night and was told to be on bedrest for the weekend.

If anyone else has any experiences like this, I'd love to hear about them.

  • I've never been through anything like that (and I really hope you never experience that kind of scare again!, but I'm so glad the baby is still doing ok!

  • I had significant bleeding at both 9 weeks and 12 weeks of my pregnancy with DS. The first time I went to the ER. The second time I just went to see my ob and she got a normal heartbeat on the monitor.

He was premature but the bleeding had nothing to do with it (I had HELLP). As you can see, he's a perfectly healthy guy today.

  • Glad all is well.  I had bleeding around 19 weeks and like the PP, now have a healthy baby!
  • I had a very similar experience at 18 weeks and again at 32 weeks - possibly even heavier bleeding than yours. It was really scary! The first time, we went to my doctor's office, where they checked my cervix and did an ultrasound (just like you). At 32 weeks, they checked my cervix and hooked me up to a contraction monitor. Both times, everything was fine - just random bleeding. Really scary since obviously there's no way of knowing the baby is OK without an ultrasound but everything turned out fine, as you can see from my sig pic!

Just take it easy the next few days. You could have had a subchorionic hematoma, which aren't uncommon and generally resolve by 20 weeks without an issue.

  • I'm so sorry about your experience.  What happened to you sounds exactly like what happened to me: a subchorionic hematoma.  About 5 or 6 times in my first trimester, I would go to the toilet to find a gush of bright red blood, followed by spotting.  It happened about every 2 weeks, and didn't affect my baby at all.  A subchorionic hematoma should usually be visible on an ultrasound, but I would imagine an ER doc wouldn't be trained enough to spot one.  Ask your OB about it.  They are harmless.   Just don't work too hard, dn't life anything heavy, and try to relax.  You'll be fine, and of course, so will your baby!!!
  • How scary.  My SIL had bleeding all through out her pregnancy, which freaked her out alot but I have a perfect little baby nephew right now.  I also had a subchorionic hematoma with my first - they just kept checking it to make sure it wasn't getting any larger but everything was fine.
  • I'm so glad you were well taken care of and doing okay. What an ordeal! Hang in there.

  • I had a similar experience and it turned out to be a subchorionic bleed.  We also spent a terrifying night in the ER (at about 7 weeks) after I began bleeding rather heavily.  Everything looked fine on the ultrasound with the baby, but they did warn me that I could bleed some more.  I think I had spotting for at least one, maybe two weeks after that. I was on edge for several months after that incident, but I now have a very healthy 14 month old.

I hope that all is okay with you and your little one.

  • wow- so scary. I had some serious spotting right around the same time as you, but nothing like that. Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly from now on!

  • so scary! I'm so glad you and the baby are OK!
  • I am so glad everyone is OK.  Feel better.
  • I'm so sorry that happened to you - how scary.  So glad everything is OK!

  • Yep.  Happened to me twice.  It was a SubChorionic Hematoma.  I did spot both bright red and dark red blood for about 2 weeks after the gush.  We had to abstain from exercise and sex for like 2-3 weeks.  Your cervix is VERY tender  (friable) and can be subsceptible to irritation.  Sex can irritate it as well and cause the gush of blood.  Glad everything is OK.
  • I had a subchorionic hematoma at 8 weeks (just two weeks ago).  It started out as the absolute worst menstrual cramps I have ever experienced - they brought me to tears, and I could not get comfortable.  I just thought it was growing pains until I stood up and had that unmistakable feeling of blood in my panties.  I was so certain that I lost my baby that I lost control of myself.  My poor husband had to drive me to the hospital as I was hysterically sobbing in the passenger seat, he was amazing.  Same thing as the other ladies, I had a vaginal u/s and a pelvic exam.  Cervix was closed, and the baby was fine.  People don't talk about these things, but they told me at the hospital that nearly 50 percent of women will have some amount of bleeding during pregnancy.  It was probably the scariest moment of my life, but everything was fine.  Pregnancy is so humbling.
