High-Risk Pregnancy

10lbs in one week

I was weighed this morning in the hospital and I almost fell out in the floor, I have gained 10 lbs. since last Sunday. My doctor doesn't do his rounds until about noon so I thought I would ask you ladies, is excessive weight gain a sign of gestational diabetes or high blood pressure? I don't have the glucose test until October 6th and I know my blood pressure is 'high' normal in the upper 130 range. I tried asking the nurse these questions but her response was to wait for my doctor. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

  • Excessive weight gain can be an indication of GD but not always.  Does your family have a history of diabetes?  If you feel that is the case, start cutting back the carbs/sugars and eat more protein.  That way, if you are GD you will have already started eating better.  On the other hand, some women just gain weight in spurts.  I remember gaining a good amount of weight towards 28 weeks so your baby could just be going through a growth spurt.  Don't stress yourself out at this point.  Eat healthy and wait to talk to your doctor.

  • This can definetely be a sign of pre-e!  Especially if your bp is trending up.  Make sure you address this with your doctor!  Hopefully it turns out to be nothing!  GL
  • Another doctor came into see me today and is having my urine checked for protein. I didn't even think about the signs of preeclampsia until the doctor mentioned it. Of course I am nosey and had to google it and kind of wish I hadn't.

  • That sort of rapid weight gain, from what I have read, is more common to pre-e than GD.  It's good that another doctor is checking on the protein in your urine.  Hopefully all is well.

  • Are you swollen?  Lots of time with the rapid weight gain there is excessive retention of fluid. Are you hands/face swollen? The protein test will tell you the most.  Best of luck and keep us posted! Don't google, there are lots of us that can give you more info than you need on pre-e... hopefully that will not be necessary!
