how much did/do your 1 month olds eat?

This weekend, we decided to let the babies sleep at night to see what they do.  Friday they still woke up like normal (every 3 hours) and last night they stretched both their night feedings to 4 hours (woohoo)!  Then I'm going to keep them eating every 3 during the day.

They currently eat about 3 1/4 ounces each feeding - sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, but usually right on the nose.  So I figure that's about 7 feedings a day so like 22-23 ounces of formula.

I've seen that you can figure out how much your baby should be eating by taking their weight x 2.5.  If you do that with my (approximately) 7 pounders, it's only 17 ounces...so would my babies be eating too much perhaps?  It seems like an extra 4 ounces is quite a bit considering their tiny sizes!  Or is that "rule" pretty much not true?

For some reason this whole feeding situation totally stresses me out.  I feel like I could really mess them up by overfeeding them/underfeeding them, throwing them off any kind of schedule or whatever - especially since we've been so lucky so far with them eating at the same time and everything.

Thanks!

  • I just checked my Similac feeding chart and it says the average for 1 to 2-month-olds is 5-6 feedings a day, 4-5 oz per feeding, for a total intake of 20-30 oz per day. To me it sounds like your LOs are right on track, though it couldn't hurt to check with your pedi. If you follow your LOs' hunger and fullness cues (i.e. don't coax them to finish a feeding if they're not interested) then you're not overfeeding them. If you did overfeed, it would most likely come back out--they'd vomit it up.

  • Thanks!  We stop when they're full and feed when they're hungry, so I guess we're ok.  We do have a lazy eater I coax occasionally so she doesn't stretch her feedings out over the hour - which she totally would if given the opportunity! :)  She prefers the suck, suck, sleep method I guess.  But nothing ever comes back up.

  • At one month our pedi recommended 24-26 oz.  DD was taking 4 oz at a time then and DS only 3 oz.

  • Sounds like you're doing things right! :) And yeah, we did have to coax a little with our boys when they were really little b/c they were lazy eaters, too. But when we described everything to the pedi she said they were perfectly healthy. They did gain like crazy the first three months (3 lbs a month) but their growth tapered off after that. At 6m they were 75th and 55th percentile, respectively, for weight.

  • Hi!

I havent been on much lately, hope you're doing well :)

I used to stress out about this but now just let them guide me. Mine, at 7 weeks (although 3 weeks adjusted) eat every 3 hrs on average even at night (WAH: ( ) and eat 2 1/2- 3 1/2 most of the time. DS eats 4 or a little more occasionally.

You're doing a great job & if they're growing that is all that matters!
