Refrigerated milk sticking to side of bottle?

I just pumped it yesterday and there is a thick film of milk on the inside of the bottle and the milk looks thicker. Is this normal?

  • Yes, the fat separates after awhile.  Just mix it up.

  • Just make sure to swirl and not shake to reconstitute.

  • I hold it in my hands for a minute or so to warm it just a bit so it is easier to swirl off the sides.

Good tip!  I sometimes have to "gently swirl" the milk in the bottle for several minutes to get it all off.  :o)  It just won't budge!

Shaking breaks down the components of breast milk

  • Some people believe that shaking breaks down the milk, but it doesn't. There was a post about this a while back, but I doubt I could find it Sad

  • I don't think shaking breaks anything down.. think about how much shaking a bottle of EBM would do in a car trip, or on an airplane. But, if you shake it too much you can make butter!

  • Totally normal. BM isn't pasturized so it separates. By the way, I totally shake the heck out of EBM bottles. I doubt it breaks it down enough to cause harm. Plus, DD gets maybe 4 bottles a week, so I figure she gets enough of the good stuff when she eats directly from me. If a few feedings a week have slightly fewer antibodies, no big deal.
