i should know this ? about breech babies

is there any way other than a sonogram to know weather or not the baby is breech? i feel licks very low, and a rolling sensation behind my hip. they are powerful so im assuming that they are kicks and not punches.

anyone else in the same boat? i guess i could just ask my OB, just seems kinda silly, if they were concerned they would check right?

  • Your OB can feel the difference between the head and the butt by feeling your belly--you're still REALLY early to have a head down baby and have PLENTY of time for baby to flip :-)

  • I don't have an answer, but wanted to say this is a good question because I have been wondering how to really tell if the baby is breech or not. I feel LO all over the place and I thought that they don't settle into one position until right near the end of pregnancy?

  • My LO has been breech up until about 2 weeks ago and I was feeling his kicks/punches on the sides.  Now that he's turned, I feel them down low in my belly and up high in the middle.
  • My OB told us at the appt before last that baby was breech just by feeling my stomach.
  • Most docs will typicall check when you are closer to your due date by feeling where the baby's head is. I know my baby is breech (had a u/s a week ago), but at this point there is plenty of time for her to turn, and it's also not as easy to feel for body parts yet, because they aren't as big. That's why they wait to check for baby's position until you are closer to your due date.
  • My lo was breech because i always felt a big lump like the size of a fist bobbing around under my ribcage but i was assured not to worry until 36 weeks.

And they were very right, my LO changed positions last week and is now head down, so don't panic just yet, you still have lots of time!

My midwife could tell by feel, too.  However I get that big lump under my rib cage and it's his or her little @ss. :)

  • My Dr feels my belly and knows.  My DD didn't flip until 37 weeks, and they double-checked on the u/s to make sure she was indeed head down.
  • I swore my baby was transverse forever, but when I went for my 28 wk checkup my OB said he was head down.  Still head down at 32 weeks.  I go for my 34 wk appt on Tuesday and am pretty sure he is still head down because my pelvis/tailbone is killing me and I feel only small movements low in my abdomen.  I have no idea how the doc could know so easily, but I guess when he's feeling thousands of ladies bellies, he gets to know what is what.

  • To me, it's very very hard to tell the difference between a head and a butt when I'm feeling the lump under my rib cage. But yeah, I would assume that an OB or midwife could tell the difference.

Plus, on my last 3 u/s, the baby is not in a fetal position, but is basically folded in half, so the feet are up by the head - crazy kid! So the kicks don't really tell me anything, if they move it could just mean that it got into a more normal position.

The best way I've heard to tell if the baby is breech or not is when the baby hiccups, where do you feel it? I know mine was breech just over a week ago, and this week when it had hicccups the top of my belly was moving and my whole chest was jumping up with each hiccup! (Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "heaving bosoms")

And the baby basically just swims all over the place until 35 weeks, but most can still flip until 37 weeks... after that, fewer flip on their own, but it's possible for them to flip even in labor.
