3rd Trimester

1cm dialated 33 weeks?

I know it doesn't really mean much to be dialated this early but my OB made it seem like it was a big deal.  I called her because I was having some mild af like cramps and she had me come in for a NST and a check.  NST came back normal with slight aggrivation but no contractions. She said because I am almost 34 weeks if I should go into labor they will not stop it.  Anyone have any experience with being dialted so early?  I didn't dialate with my DD until 38 weeks and it ended up doing nothing as I was induced.  Just wondering.

Re: 1cm dialated 33 weeks?

  • That is weird that she said they wouldn't stop it. I was 33 weeks and 3 days and they stopped mine with magnesium gave me steriod shots for the babies lungs (two doses 24 hours apart). I was in the hospital for the weekend. Having contractions (that I wasn't feeling) every 5 minutes. They sent my home on procardia. I was 1cm dialated by the time the mag started to work and slowed the contractions.

I get to go off the procardia (still having contractions about 1 hour to as little as 25 minutes apart depending on time of day) tomorrow after my appointment as I will be 36 weeks soon and he is measuring almost 8 pounds.

    Good Luck!

  • I was 2cm at 35 weeks so don't know how long that took. They didn't do anything to stop mine but did take me out of wrk and said to rest. I am now at 38 weeks and still no baby but many ER trips and many ?'s for the doc. They sd they would have induced me if I was further along. So its been torture waiting and hurting. I am being induced on Monday if he doesn't come on his own b4 then. Good luck :)
  • I had to go to the doctor the other day for a yeast infection.  While they were down there, they checked to see if I was dilated.  Apparently I'm 1 cm, 50% effaced, and I'm 32 weeks today.  I asked if it was kind of early to be dilated, and they didn't seem worried at all.  I do know that you can dilate pretty early and have nothing happen for forever.  I haven't had the cramps or anything though, so that might make things a little different.
  • I was 1cm at 33 weeks, went in for the same thing as you.  My FFN was negative :)
  • I guess the policy in the practice/hospital is that after 34 weeks gestation they will not stop labor from progessing, which I find strange because they have a very very strict inducation policy.  I know that dialation is sometimes a very controversial thing and some drs don't even want to check because #1 it doesn't predict anything and #2 it can aggrivate the cervix but I guess because I never went into labor I just really don't know what to expect at this point and dr couldn't give me any indication either.  Just said that the cramping would be my baseline and if it gets any worse to come in.  Until then I get checked weekly.

  • I was 3 cm at 33 weeks and went into ptl-- I was given procardia to slow things down (they thought I was going to deliver within 24 hours so they wanted things to slow down enough to give me 1 round of steroid shots for LO's lungs).  Anyway, I didn't deliver, thank goodness, and LO is still baking.  I am at home on strict bedrest, though I may be taken off of it tomorrow and allowed to do some little things around the house.  I was told at 36 weeks I should be able to live life as usual again because at that point the doctors are comfortable with LO coming.  In short, take it really easy, and try not to freak out.  I have been contracting ALL THE TIME, but I have not progressed.  It seems you really can't expect anything, and anything could happen at anytime so we are just taking things day by day.  I wish you and your LO the best!!

  • I was put on BR at 33w b/c I was a cm dilated and having PTL.

You absolutely need to INSIST on getting the betamethasone shots if they're not going to stop labor at 34w.  (That's the steroid for baby's lung development.)  34w is too early to deliver....

With that said--you could walk around for weeks at 1cm and nothing happen...but with you cramping and such, I'd say you're headed down the PTL road b/c that's exactly what happened with me.  GOOD LUCK!
