3rd Trimester

38+ Weekers - Are you getting the flu shot?

At my appt yesterday my MW said they want everyone to now, and even though I'm due in 16 days and on bed rest so I don't come in contact with a lot of germs to get one. She said there will be tons of germs in the hospital and it helps to be prepared...

Last year I got my first flu shot ever and had the flu for 4 days within 24 hrs, I have a crappy immune system.

So, what are you doing?

  • My Dr. recommended that I get it also, but I turned it down.

  • I'm not 38 weeks, but another point that my midwife made to me is newborns can't get a flushot that young so it will help prevent you from getting it even after the baby is born so you won't get it and pass it on to the baby, so she recommended that I get it as well as my husband.

  • Sorry, I'm not 38 weeks yet and I've never had a flu shot in my life and have been good so far.  My doc recommended it too and said even though I'll deliver shortly after I can get it, the benefits of it pass onto the baby through breastfeeding.  So even though I've been mixed about it all these years, I'll be getting one.

  • The flu shot does not cause the flu.

  • I had one last week. Since then, I've had a sore throat, congestion, and losing my voice. DH has it too and it's probably totally unrelated, but I would say to get it sooner than later. I just keep hoping it goes away quickly before I deliver!

I didn't mean to imply it caused the flu, I meant that I got it right away, there are different strains and the vaccine doesn't cover them all...

  • I'M TRYING!  No one here has it, though.

  • I get one for free through work next week. My doctor suggested my husband and I each get the flu shot as a way to protect the baby from the flu. So we're asking our family members to get one as well.

  • i got mine on Mon.  it was kind of weird because they didn't really give me an option. the nurse just said "today's flu shot day" and got out the shot.  it was fine because i was planning on getting one anyway but weird.  i also didn't realize this but according to the pamphlet they gave me for it, the shot doesn't work to its full potential for 2 weeks.  i was glad i got it when i did so that way i'll have the immunity it provides by the time LO arrives.  also-i have had NO side effects.  the only thing was that it hurt afterwards!  like a bad bruise.
  • I got one, as did DH, even though neither of us ever have before.  We're the buffer between the outside world and the kid, so I think it's worth it, even if there's no guarantee that it'll be the right strain.

  • I got mine last week at a clinic b/c my dr's office wasn't offering it until nearly my due date. I'm glad I did, it suddenly seems like EVERYONE around me is sick - I thought it was allergies but no, these people are actually ill.

  • I'm not 38 weeks yet, but I'm on a waiting list for a thimerasol free flu shot.  I'm not sure what I'll do if I can't get the thimerasol free dose

  • I've never had a flu shot, and I've never had the flu. Don't plan on messing with things now. No way.

My OB hasn't even brought it up.

  • I am getting thimerasol free flu shot once available but after LO is born which hopefully is in the next two weeks.
  • My OB offered it on the way out of the office today.  I said no thanks.  If she had volunteered any kind of information on it, or said "I really recommend this", I may have considered.  I've never gotten one before, and I don't really know anything about it, so as of now, I have no plans to get it.

Does anybody know where I can find information on this, or is it just something my doctor should tell me about?

  • I got mine today.  My MW also said they were recommending it to all pregnant patients.

  • I got mine on Mon. It was tough to find a place that had them. My regular doctor's office doesn't even have them yet. I got one mainly because I am delivering in a hospital where sick people go. I know the maternity ward is separate, but still...

I got mine with my dr's office and declined it until I got proper information. You can get information about the flu shot and it's reccommendations for pregnant women from any health department or hospital or from the center of desease control at this website. https://www.cdc.gov/FLU/protect/keyfacts.htm

Basically what the flu vaccine does for you is it gives you an immunity to the strains that the CDC predicted to be the most dominant strains. Therefore, it won't protect you against all strains. There are some side affects including mild flu-like symptoms but they should not be anything as severe as the actual flu and should only last for about 24-48 after the shot. This also creates kind of a barrier for baby since infants cannot receive the flu shot by making you immune to certain strains and DH if he should happen to get the shot also. Hope this helps :)

  • I was completely opposed, until the wife of a fellow officer got the flu.  She was 36 weeks pregnant.  It went to her lungs, and they took the baby emergency C-section.  She is on a ventilator now, with a guarded prognosis.  I believe they placed her in a medically induced coma, and has been that way for 3 weeks!  Baby is fine and was able to leave the NICU last week.  How scary though!!  I have never gotten the flu shot, and it really worries me getting it during pregnancy.  After seeing this family suffer through this tragedy, I WILL be getting it!!  My 7 year old HAS to get it due to her asthma....Sad
