Homemade baby food - peas

Peas are giving me troubles.  I can't get them smooth enough in the food processor.  I used the steamer bag peas from the freezer section and steamed them 2 minutes longer than it called for to try and soften them up.  Any tips??

  • we throw them in the blender on high, works better than food processor imo.

  • Yeah, use the blender at first.  After a little while, the processor will be enough for your LO.  Good luck!

  • strain 'em if they're still not smooth enough
  • Don't use the steamer bags for peas, they don't get mushy enough. Just boil/steam them in a pan and then put in blender with some of the cooking water until smooth. They'll come out dandy.
  • I use the Magic Bullet and puree the heck out of them and it works for us.  I used frozen peas and just boiled them til they were really really soft.
  • Like PP, I have to do peas and green beans in the blender.  The food processor is fine for most things, but DS won't eat peas and green beans unless they're very creamy.
  • I just made peas last night for DD and they came out great!  I was a little nervous before I started because of what I read on wholesomebabyfood.com about the skins giving you trouble, but here's what I did:

1 bag of organic frozen peas from Trader Joe's
Cooked per instructions on bag (bring 1 cup water to a boil, add peas, bring back to a boil, lower heat and let simmer for 8 minutes)
Pureed in blender with some of the water reserve

I added only a little bit of water at first and just kept adding more until it was the right consistency.  Then I would let it puree for a minute or so and mix it around and add more water if necessary.  Eventually, it was smooth and creamy, but it took about 10 minutes to get it there.

  • Peas don't get very smooth for me either.  I usually add a bit of water, and just get them as smooth as possible.  DS doesn't mind that they're a bit chunky.
