3rd Trimester

Breech at 34 wks = C section?...

So I had to have an additional U/S to check baby's kidneys (which are ok now). Baby is breech. I have been quoted a usual 50% chance of baby turning to head down. However, my OB today said because of a few factors: it's my first baby, where the placenta is located and low amniotic fluid causing things to be a little tight in there, that she doubts he'll turn. His butt is wedged kinda low in my pelvis.

Anyone have any experience or insight?

I am cracking my husband up by trying different positions all over the floor trying to get baby to turn. I am heading to the pool this weekend to do some handstands and flip turns.

Re: Breech at 34 wks = C section?...

  • Don't worry too much I had to have several u/s between weeks 31and 34. In everyone my DD was breech so I was really worried, I had another one at 36 1/2 weeks to see if she flipped and she had just done so a couple days before. I was soo worried about having a c-section because she was breech for soo long and everyone else around me on these boards already had baby flipped for weeks ahead of me. Now she finally flipped a week ago and everything is fine and we are just waiting for her to start doing something.

  • So great to hear! Thanks. Not that I can control it either way, but really hoping for vaginal birth!
  • A friend of mine just delivered her healthy baby girl breech. The doc didn't even know she was breech until there she came, butt first completely folded in half! You might talk to your OB about the possibility of still delivering vaginally, obviously its way more of a risk (and a major ouch!) but it does happen. GL either way!

  • My baby was transverse FOREVER and turned at 37 weeks, RIGHT before I was about to do a scheduled external version.

Babies do and can turn after 34 weeks.  I wanted to do everything I could to avoid c-section.  So keep on with those positions girl...they can work!  I also went to the chiropractor for the Webster technique. I believe that helped a lot too!

  • PP just said something about a version, and that would be my next question for my doc if I were you, if it is safe to do in your case. I don't know how they determine that, but I know certain things could make it safer to do c/s instead of version. But then again, like the other gals said, a lot of times they turn in the last few weeks without help. I hope your LO does too!
  • They can usually turn pretty easily until about 36-37 weeks. I wouldn't worry yet!

  • My baby was breech.  I tried all the spinning babies techniques trying to get her to turn. Finally I tried an external version which ended up causing my water to break and they did a c-section the next day.  Once they got her out they confirmed there was no way she was going to turn on her own - she was 7lbs7oz but just too big to flip (also my first baby).  Anyway, the c-section was not bad at all.  I had really wanted to deliver vaginally but in the end it didnt matter.  There are pros and cons to both methods.

  • my LO was frank breech since 27 weeks, he was just comfortable there, I had a c-section as a result... so my sons head was stuck by my ribs for the last majority of my pregnancy... c-section went well though :)

  • DD was frank breech starting at 32 weeks. ?I had a c/s scheduled for 39 weeks. ?I tried some spinning babies techniques but they didn't work. ?I also talked to my dr about an external version but, because of the risks, decided it wasn't something I wanted to do. ?I was really upset at first about not being able to have a vaginal delivery, but I soon realized that a c/s was what was best for me and the baby and that's what was most important! ?My c/s went perfectly - my recovery was a piece of cake - and DD is perfect!
